Uber’s In-App Tipping Feature Expands to 121 Cities Across North America

Gadget & Techology
SOURCE:macrumors.comUber in June announced plans for a "180 Days of Change" initiative that added a new long-desired tipping feature for drivers. Tipping was initially limited to Seattle, Minneapolis, and Houston, but Uber said tips would be available to all U.S. drivers by the end of July, and the company is making good on that promise. Starting today, tipping is rolling out in 121 cities across North America, including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and several cities in Canada. TechCrunch has a full list of all of the areas where tipping is now available. The tipping feature will continue to expand to additional cities throughout the month of July, and Uber says it is still planning to have the feature available to all U.S. drivers by the end of th...

Uber Users Can Now ‘Request a Ride for a Loved One’

Gadget & Techology
SOURCE:macrumors.comUber yesterday introduced a new ride-hailing feature in its mobile app that lets users request a ride for a friend or family member in a different location. Uber announced the news in a blog post on its website, suggesting the feature would let users "request a ride for a loved one" such as a senior with limited mobility who doesn't have an Uber account or a smartphone. Now, when you set the pickup away from your current location, we'll automatically ask whether the ride is for a family member or friend. You can then select the rider from your address book, set their destination, and request the ride on their behalf.Once the ride is on its way, the loved one receives a text message with the driver's details and a link to track their route. The feature also includes...
Lyft adds pickup suggestions for smoother ride routing

Lyft adds pickup suggestions for smoother ride routing

Gadget & Techology
SOURCE:techcrunch.comLyft will offer pickup suggestions in the latest version of the Android or iOS app, making it easier for drivers to pick riders up without having to do traffic gymnastics, while also hopefully saving riders time. The pickup suggestions only trigger when it’ll actually save you time as a rider, Lyft says, and they’re only ever within short walking distance, plus you can opt to stick with your original pickup spot should you so choose. The pickup suggestions are available in every market where Lyft operates, and spell out explicitly how much time you’ll save by using them, accounting for walking time, and even factoring in stuff like time lost to crosswalks and traffic lights. Lyft rival Uber started testing suggested pickup points in 2015, and the app currently

Taking a ride in MIT’s self-driving wheelchair

SOURCE:techcrunch.comOver the past few months, CSAIL’s (MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory) self-driving wheelchair has become a familiar sight around the MIT halls. It’s a nice little rolling advertisement for the lab’s work — and more importantly, it’s a great opportunity to test the mobility device in a real world setting. As students wander by in groups, deep in conversation or face down in their smartphones, their paths are unpredictable and collisions are a very real possibility. This kind of real world testing is exactly why the chair exists in the first place. It’s hard to test autonomous cars in out on the streets. It turns out there’s a lot of red tape involved when it comes to trying out driverless technology in the real world — particularly in

Acting President Osinbajo in for a Rough Ride

SOURCE:TORI.NG  Yemi Osinbajo   Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has been trying to quell the tension arising from the quit notice by some N`orthern youths over separatist agitations in the South-East, but analysts demand more than meetings from the government, writes Gbenro Adeoye of the Punch.   The events of the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War, remain etched in the minds of all those who witnessed them. It was fought between the government of Nigeria and the secessionist state of Biafra, an area dominated by Igbo.   In the three-year period that the war lasted, there were an estimated 100,000 military casualties and about three million civilians, many of whom had died of hunger and diseases.   But since the war, the country has arguably not been as polarised along re

Lyft launches two premium ride hailing options, Lux and Lux SUV

Gadget & Techology
SOURCE:techcrunch.comLyft is getting into the higher-end ride hailing game with Lyft Lux and Lyft Lux SUV. These are black car offerings similar to the service that rival Uber originally launched with, and they’ll be available beginning in 20 markets with a gradual rollout starting now in five initial markets and continuing through mid-June. Lux will roll out first in five U.S. cities where it makes the most sense to expect a demand for premium ride options, including Chicago, LA, NYC, SF and San Jose. On the driver side, the process of getting approved to drive Lux is obviously a bit more complex than the standard procedure for signing up to drive Lyft, and includes both a geographic requirement (you have to drive in a city where it’s currently offered), and a higher, more specifi

Tesla’s next Autopilot update is all about the smooth ride

SOURCE:techcrunch.comTesla is improving Autopilot with a forthcoming update, with a focus on making the ride smoother while the autonomous highway driving system is engaged. Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted news of the update on Monday night, indicating that the new software would be rolling out beginning in June. While Musk was not super forthcoming regarding additional details, the update will focus on the control algorithm that determines things like how and when Autopilot accelerates and brakes, which should help avoid sudden starts and jitters that can make for a less than ideal ride using the system today.Excited about the Tesla Autopilot software release rolling out next month. New control algorithm feels as smooth as silk. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 22, 2017One of the ch
