Our laws allow us to run the Medical School - FUTMINNA VC

LR: FUTMINNA VC, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, FSSSN shaking hands with Col. Sani Bello

Prof. Bala made this disclosure during a courtesy visit to former Governor of Old Kano State Colonel Sani Bello on Thursday, September 10, 2020.

The tour took place in the conference room of the Sani Bello Foundation office in Kontagora, Niger State.

Prof Bala announced that setting up a medical science faculty would be capital intensive, adding that it would require building a new complex, hiring experienced medical staff, and building a teaching hospital. He noted that the only way to address the challenges listed above is through the Governor of Niger State, Alh. (Dr) Abubakar Sani Bello is leading a delegation in the Presidency to request special funding and concessions to launch, as other science and technology universities have done in the past.

The Vice Chancellor announced that the university had made arrangements with the management of the Federal Medical Center, Bida, to use its facilities as a teaching hospital for clinical practice, and stated that the university already had several on-site support departments responsible for the Floating a medicine required school.

The university helmsman also announced that, despite the funding gap; The university is still the best among the specialized universities and is also one of the ten best universities in Nigeria. He also asked Col. Bello to help fund the construction of the university research farm, which he believed would help stem the incessant clashes between shepherds and farmers in the country.

He assured the retired colonel that priority would always be given to the state of Niger, especially candidates from Zone C of the state based on the principle of fairness.

However, he frowned because the Niger State was unable to meet its allotted admission quota each year, despite urging Colonel Sani Bello to consider building a women’s hostel in FUTMinna for Niger State students to help the state enroll to promote.

It was also recommended that scholarships be extended to deserving state students to pursue courses at the university.

He commended Col. Bello for his sacrifice and development in Niger State and in Nigeria at large through his Foundation and other business ventures, while noting that the university would be willing to work with the Foundation on entrepreneurship and information technology education.

During the visit, Colonel Bello thanked the Vice Chancellor for the visit, despite the great distance from the state capital. He appealed to the Vice Chancellor to consider students from Zone C of the state for admission, as well as employment opportunities to fill the gap with other zones.

Former Old Kano state governor told the delegation that the Sani Bello Foundation has started building a university in Kontagora to complement FUTMinna’s and other universities’ efforts to provide quality education. He announced that the proposed university has a start date for the 2022/23 academic session.

He expressed concern that Niger State students were not being admitted to study medicine and surgery or law at Usman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto because the state’s past and present governments are unable to meet their financial obligations to comply with the university. He advised FUTMinna’s management to start medical programs so that more state students have the opportunity to pursue their dreams of becoming doctors or lawyers.

Meanwhile, the retired Colonel urged the university to distribute some of its faculties across the state in order to bring education closer to people and ensure economic development. He assured the university’s management of his decision to contact one of its companies, Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, with the institution to fund a project at the institution as part of their social responsibility as FUTMinna is in one of the companies Catchment areas of the hydropower company.

The General Director of the Foundation, Dr. Zakari S. Ikani, later took the Vice Chancellor and another delegation from FUTMinna on a tour of the facilities of the Col.
