From Dr. Haralambos M. Bousias
That day [7th of September] We remember our venerable and god-bearing father Daniel, who recently lived in the Athonite desert of Katounakia.
Christ, whom you sang in asceticism on Athos,
You’re hymning with your lips now, oh Daniel, in heaven.
The holy first fruit of the monastic brotherhood of the Danilaioi in Katounakia of Athos, our venerable father Daniel, shone as a ray in his ascetic training lately and enlightened all Christians with his infallible guidance and his wise admonitions. Born into a family with many children, he was from Smyrna and longed to please Christ and dedicate his life to him from a young age. He was encouraged to do so by the Venerable Arsenios of Paros, and after receiving the blessing from his mother, he left for Athos. He exercised obedience and humility in the monasteries of Saint Panteleimon and Vatopaidi and settled in Katounakia as a desert-loving sparrow. There he behaved as one who was on an equal footing with the angels and, through his written admonitions, led a large number of pious monks from Kechrovouni of Tinos and the Holy Trinity of Aegina to Theose. He made an unbreakable friendship with the venerable Nektarios and gave the saint of the Greek letters Alexandros Moraitides great strength. He was honored for his incessant prayer and measured everything in life as something alien and was counted as one who was a citizen of the angels. In the hut of the Holy Athonites, where he established his Synodia, known for her hospitality as an elder and founder, he distinguished himself for his musical training and the beautiful voice of their melodies, and there are his honorable and graceful relics.
Through his holy intercession, Christ God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
Apolyticion in the plagalus of the first tone
You lived a chaste way of life on Athos, oh jewelry of Katounakia, and Daniel, who became like God when you tirelessly gathered sweet honey from the rocks like a bee, oh wise man. Therefore, we, who have all been nourished by Your graces, partake of Your favor.
Contact in the plagal of the fourth tone
The follower of virtue and discernment of the venerable Athonite Fathers, let us praise who, with wisdom and self-control, have shown themselves to be an infallible guide for the believers who became all things for all. Let us call to Daniel, loved by Christ: Rejoice, O venerable one.
When you coveted the things of heaven, O Daniel, you lived your life wisely, and therefore you despised all things that perish, and in Katounakia you inclined your nous to the Lord and awakened the choirs of ascetics to come to you scream:
Rejoice, Pearl of Athos,
Rejoice, Director of Wisdom.
Rejoice, sweet singing swallow of self-control,
Rejoice, roommates of the noetic armies.
Rejoice, precious offspring of Smyrna, adored by asceticism,
Look forward to a sweet and refreshing drink from the divine spring.
Rejoice, rays of those who live in asceticism on Athos,
Rejoice, joy of the holy fathers of the desert.
Rejoice, always shining beacon of purity,
Rejoice, golden tower of alienation [from the world].
Rejoice, friend of the holy Nectarios,
Rejoice, lamp of the ascetic choir.
Rejoice, O venerable Daniel.
Rejoice, the rule of discernment, O Daniel, the newly shining ornament of the fathers. Rejoice, you who have ceaselessly led the monastic life and led to the life to come, O Athonite of the divine spirit.
