UHC continues its practice, which began with the onset of COVID-19 in March, and will be running virtual high holidays to greet the new year 5781. Rabbi Emily Dana will officiate over Zoom and gatherings and guests from her homes in Terre Haute and the surrounding area will join the country.
“This year will be like no other because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” writes UHC President Betsy Frank. “Indeed, many call this a year in which they re-imagine the Holy Days.
“No doubt our overhaul brings mixed feelings, including sadness, with it. We know that we cannot be together in our beautiful sanctuary. However, we know in our hearts that pikuach nefesh, a Hebrew term for “saving a life,” is a sacred Jewish value. Saving a life does not mean personal service.
“With every challenge, however, there are opportunities. Perhaps in the past physical distance has prevented families from being together during the Most Holy Days. Not this year! We can take our families with us in our virtual services. “
Yana Weinstein will return for the fourth year in a row as a UHC soloist for Erev Rosh Hashanah and Kol Nidre.
Izaak Skillman will take on Shofar duties.
UHC will distribute prayer books, calendars, and Taschlich tips to community members who request them. For prayer books or zoom invitations, email Betsy Frank and send one Facebook message or use our Contact form.
Congregants can also track services online using the Gates of repentance Prayer book. (Select the link and scroll down Gates of repentance;; Select the cover to open the book. Access the table of contents and select the appropriate service from the menu at the bottom of the screen.)
