The role of systems and lawyers at the community level Domesic Violence

This conference is hosted by the Battered Women’s Justice Project and has yet to be approved by the OVW. However, due to the pandemic, it has been postponed and will practically be organized for January 2021. Pre-registration will open in autumn 2020.

Conference overview

This conference brings together members of a coordinated Community Response (CCR) team to improve their effectiveness in addressing threats to victims by strengthening the role, relationship between, and access to system and community-based advocates. Participants will learn tools that can be used by community-level lawyers, system-based lawyers, victim witness coordinators, law enforcement, and law enforcement coordinators to assess a victim’s risk at different times and in different environments, and how to use tools to improve risk Can be criminal response to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence.

By attending this conference, attendees will be better able to:

  • Incorporate innovative responses to hazard assessment.
  • Addressing confidentiality concerns about the safety of victims in all areas of CCRs;
  • Discuss the use of criminogenic and computer-specific tools to assess risk in a coordinated community response;
  • Organize practitioners to improve criminal justice response and victim safety.

Who should attend

This event is open to OVW Scholarship holders receiving funding from the Improving Criminal Justice Responses (ICJR), STOP and Rural programs. Priority will be given to ICJR scholarship holders. Scholarship holders are strongly advised to attend the conference in multidisciplinary teams involved in a CCR. Teams should include representatives from Prosecution (e.g. sworn, civil, and law enforcement based victim advocates), Prosecution (e.g. Prosecutors, law enforcement investigators and victim witness coordinators), Community-based advocacy, and other members of the CCR.
