Organize your middle school student with tips from this post, which is sponsored by Walmart photo
The start of school this year is different than ever before. Instead of gathering supplies and filling a backpack so our kids can go to school, we’re turning bedrooms into classrooms. For my daughter, who is in middle school, it meant we had to organize a little so that she could study.
We’re already discovering that middle school is a whole different ball game. Even if we weren’t in the middle of shelter, the way we organized Ayva’s learning over the past year had to be strengthened.
This is the first year she’s switching classes and has a lot more subjects to keep up with.
Regardless of the circumstances back to school, I wanted to make sure my tween was geared towards success. She and I sat down to see what she needed to do well in school this year.
We found that she needed support most urgently to keep up with all of the things she has to do from schoolwork to her extracurricular activities.
We designed a few tools that would help and went to Walmart Photo to have them printed.
The first thing we did to get Ayva organized for middle school was to minimize the distractions in her bedroom.
She had tons of pictures and posters all over the place, but we found that sitting at her desk all day would be overwhelming.
We took down most of the posters to make room for the poster and calendar that we at Walmart Photo made for them.
As soon as we cleared the walls she said that it looked like the room had more space. I knew this would help her focus!
Go with an old school calendar
We certainly live in a digital world and there are several ways Ayva uses technology to keep up with important data. It’s just something to write a date on a calendar with a pen that makes it stick only to me.
Since Ayva first started school, we have been given a new calendar every year to keep track of the dates. We did one this year personalized wall calendar at Walmart Photo.
The calendar was super easy to make. I was able to pick it up just a few hours after we made it. We have uploaded pictures to the website Walmart photo page (I love that we were able to get them through the Walmart Photo app from Google Photos) and chose the theme from one of their many templates.
The whole process only took about 30 minutes and only because we couldn’t decide which images to use!
Try an old school wall calendar to keep your middle school student organized in an analog way. I promise it will make a difference.
Make a to-do list
I asked Ayva what she thought was the biggest challenge in middle school. She said keep up with everything. Productivity is my problem and I know that not everyone can function from a list.
Because I know my daughter, I came up with the idea of a to-do board. Instead of a straight list that forces her brain to think linearly, this chalkboard allows her to write things down on scraps of paper while she thinks about them.
She posts the tasks on the board and has a picture of what to do.
She can also physically pull her task off the board and throw it away when she’s done. There is a level of satisfaction in this action that enables it to get more done!
I also printed the foam poster at Walmart Photo and used one of them templates as a guide. The board was ready for collection about two hours after I placed my order.
Adding affirmations that Ayva can see when looking at it is a small way to add support to her self-esteem.
This is not a normal school year
Whatever you do, remember that our children are facing a very challenging situation. This is not a normal school year.
Make sure to let your middle school student know how proud you are of them and motivate them. Taking the time to organize is one of the easiest ways to do this.
