I wish I could say these were my chemistry teachers when I got my college minor. Who are they actually?
These eminently named scientists are all staff trainers at Mad Science, a scientific enrichment program for children. The program was founded in 1985 by two brothers with a hobby of conducting spectacular science experiments at home. Children in their neighborhood noticed “fun science” on the street, and then the brothers’ passion for science grew into a thriving business with locations across the country.
Chances are those of you with kids have spent more time than you ever expected watching slime tutorials on YouTube. I have two young children. I helped them make slime (it was really fun). The best thing about the slime trend? Now me knows You love science experiments! I just need to diversify the types of home science we know how to do – this is where mad science comes in.
Mad Science offers a variety of at-home activities to help children enjoy hands-on science learning. First there is the free content like coloring pages and a whole host of amazing experiments at home. Then there is guided virtual programming where children receive materials and are taught by one of the most famous scientists. The Portland Mad Science team has also restructured its personal COVID security offerings and is offering a personal school support camp to assist students in completing distance learning assignments.
When science is fun, distance learning motivates children, gets them excited about a topic that can be intimidating, and lets them do something when they are bored at home.
Mad Science HQ in Portland is located in North Ainsworth, just off the interstate. Look at her.
