Your Guide to Selling Diet Supplements Online : E-COMMERCE MARKETING

Government guidelines

There are many government guidelines to consider when selling dietary supplements directly to consumers online. Finding space for supplements can be tricky as omission of information or incorrect information can get retailers into hot water very quickly.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the manufacture and sale of all dietary supplements. The following must be listed on each product:

  • All ingredients
  • The manufacturer
  • The packing point
  • A product description
  • The word “supplement”

Here is a link to a page on the FDA website that explains more about these requirements.

In addition, it is illegal to claim that a supplement treats a disease or provides medicinal benefits. You absolutely cannot claim that your product will help people achieve anything at all unless you can back it up with authentic scientific studies. When making a claim, it must be accompanied by the following text: ‚ÄúThis statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. “

If dietary supplements are mislabelled in any way, companies will receive a letter from the FDA. Every year the FDA sends hundreds of letters to various organizations mislabeling their products. Once a company receives a letter from the FDA, it has 15 days to respond and take remedial action. If a company doesn’t, the FDA will force product recalls and / or seizures.
