How many scholarships should I apply for? Canada Education

“How many grants should I apply for?” I get this question pretty often.

There is no single answer to this question. It varies from person to person, but as a round number, my answer is, “You should apply for at least ten scholarships during your 12th grade.”

Applying for ten scholarships is not difficult if you meet the following conditions:

  • You get involved voluntarily and in the community. Most scholarships require a student to engage in community engagement, including volunteer experience. So if you don’t have one, you will qualify for fewer awards, and if you have some, you will qualify for more awards.

  • You have your Activity list and some great essay content ready to go. Many scholarships require students to submit a list of their scholarships extracurricular activities and Write an essay. You can often use the same information (with some tweaks and adjustments) over and over for many different applications throughout the year. This method allows you to apply for more scholarships in less time. This is the method I teach because it works. Students who use it often win grants, and some win multiple grants.

Applying for just one or two scholarships rarely produces results. It only makes sense that the more you apply, the more chance you have of winning.

So if you meet the requirements, apply.

If you qualify for many scholarships and you don’t have the time to apply for all of them, choose the ones that look the most promising. These are usually local awards, ie provincial or municipal awards rather than the major national awards. Avoid popularity contests, such as those where you need to share something on social media to get more chances of winning. Instead, opt for real scholarships – those based on merit.

Grade 12 is the best opportunity for students to win scholarships. There will never be a time in your life when there is more opportunity and less competition. Don’t waste this golden window of opportunity. Applying for at least ten scholarships during the year will increase your chances of winning.
