Are you a very organized person? Do you like to learn about laws and how they apply to your finances?

In that case, you might be interested in becoming an accountant.

Accountants specialize in many different fields and earn on average $ 70,000 annuallyThis makes this a very lucrative job opportunity for you.

How do you start?

Read on for a step-by-step guide on how to become an accountant:

1. Find the right study program

The first step in becoming an accountant is to dig into the right study program.

There are many different areas for accountants, but they all start with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. This program will teach you tax law and you will also take many math classes.

You are also expected to take some business related courses such as management, financial record, auditing, and ethics. A course in Online qualification for leadership and management will also help you move forward in your career.

During your school years, you should also consider the type of specialty you are interested in as you move forward in your career.

There are certain courses that you can add to your curriculum to pursue the subject you have chosen.

Many universities now offer courses on campus or online programs. Before planning your class, consider what type of learning environment will work best for you.

2. Decide on your career path

There are many different career paths that you can choose from when becoming an accountant.

You can decide whether you want to work in a special area such as financial accounting or operational accounting.

If you don’t want to find yourself in a specific niche, you can qualify as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or get a Masters degree.

Generally, accountants work as part of a team in a company or in a private office. Your day-to-day responsibilities may include accounting, processing tax returns, reviewing financial records, or providing guidance.

Some accountants work for government agencies at the local, state, or federal level.

Or you work as a chartered accountant and travel year round through accounting firms across the country.

If you love to travel this is a great option for you. You can help your customers improve their businesses while getting to know the country.

3. Gain experience

While you are in school learning all of the industry requirements, business scenarios, and best practices, find an internship that also allows you to receive on-the-job training.

This is a great way to see how the skills you learn in school can be incorporated into the actual job.

Some programs may require some time on an internship as part of their graduation requirements.

However, some may not find it valuable to have some real world experience. It will look great on your resume too and will impress potential employers.

Another good reason to look for an internship is that it will help you stand out from all entry-level positions after you graduate.

Since you already have experience, you can apply for a higher-ranking position. The money you make will also help pay your way through school.

4. Complete your degrees and certifications

Next, you need to work on completing your degree and getting additional courseware that you will need for the subject you focused on.

If you are aiming for an advanced degree, make an effort to perform well in all of your classes as you may need a specific GPA to get into the next program.

If you are planning on becoming a Chartered Accountant, now is the time to prepare for the CPA exam.

You must have at least 1800 hours of working with someone who is a licensed CPA. An internship during your studies is ideal here.

The CPA exam has four parts that you must pass. Auditing and certification, regulation, financial accounting and reporting, and finally the business environment and concepts.

The exam usually takes place over a few days and you can take the parts in any order.

Due to the difficulty of this exam, consider some additional prep courses to prepare for the big day.

5. Find a job

Once you graduate or have already graduated, it’s time to secure a job. Your internship experience can help you here.

Most junior-level positions require at least two to three years of experience. This becomes difficult if you haven’t started while you’re still in school.

If you’re looking for a position that is perfect for you, one of the best ways to see all that is available is searching online.

LinkedIn is a great website to post your resume or information on to help potential employers find you. They also have a great job board where you can see what’s open.

Your school will also have a job posting for you to review. The networking within your relationships can also open up opportunities for you. If you’ve worked at a company that already worked as an intern, you may find a full-time position there.

Many internships result in full-time positions as the employer has already had an opportunity to get to know you and your work ethic.
