The importance of a sober mind for mental stability ~ Daily disciple Christianity

I have chronic back pain, and one of the most important things the doctors tell me is to build a strong core to relieve some of that pain. That’s because having a strong core helps align the spine, reduces muscle tension and injury, and promotes proper posture. It helps with physical stability. In the same way, a strong spiritual core keeps us centered on God’s will, walking upright and spiritually stable.

The spiritual core of a Christian is his spirit, for wherever the spirit goes, emotions, words and actions follow. That is why the Bible tells us to be “renewed in the spirit of our spirit” (Eph. 4:23) and “by the renewal of your spirit” (Rom. 12: 2). We need a sober mind for mental stability.

What is mental stability?

Spiritual stability means that we are unaffected, stable and strong in faith. Mature, rooted and grounded in the truth and faithful to the Lord.

Spiritually instability is characterized by doubt, ambiguity, discouragement and leads to deviating from belief. Being spiritually stable is something that every Christian should be intentional about.

1Corinthians 15: 58 ~ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, and always rich in the work of the Lord, for you know that your work in the Lord is not in vain.

3 prayers for spiritual stability

In my last post for the Pray With Confidence website, I shared three short prayers that I pray for spiritual stability. They help me be sober, spiritually filled, and sensitive to the Lord’s guidance. Here is one of them:

Heavenly Father, I ask you to fill me with your spirit, to filter my thoughts and words with your scriptures, and to focus on your glory today. Clean up the distractions, bring your word to my memory, and think about things. I want to bring you honor, Lord, so please cleanse me of sin and give me a new anointing of the Holy Spirit to do your will and to represent you well today.

I ask the Lord for a sober spirit and He is always faithful to hear and answer these prayers. For example, my only daughter has just left for her freshman year. We are very close and I miss her terribly, but the Lord kept me out of the pit of depression by keeping me sober.

What is hindering mental stability?

There are several things that hinder a Christian’s spiritual stability. For example, habitual sin, emotional instability, and unbelief affect our steadfastness. But when believers are sober, they walk in the Spirit and remove these obstacles.

A sober woman can stand firm in faith and will not be tossed around by every wind of doctrine. (Eph. 4:14, James 1: 6) She is able to discern truth from error and walk in wisdom. Strong faith and abundant peace are the fruit of a sober mind.

Isaiah 26: 3 ~ You will keep him in perfect peace, whose spirit remains with you; because he trusts in you.

How to have a sober mind for spiritual stability

To be sober, flood your mind with the truth and filter every problem in life through that truth. First you have to know the truth, so you have to read your bible. It is not enough just to read it, you have to follow it, memorize it and recite it to be sober.

Action required

A strong physical core requires tensing these muscles, strengthening exercises, and eating a healthy diet to rid your body of excess weight. In order to have a strong spiritual core, we must pay similar attention to engaging, exercising, and casting out lies. We must Throw down fantasies (2Cor. 10: 5) and Think of things that are true (Phil. 4: 8) to be sober. The more we do this, the more mature we are in Christ and the stronger we will stand against the world, the flesh and the devil.

In the week before my daughter was leaving, I was really struggling to control my emotions. So I wrote down my feelings, named the lies I believed in, and replaced them with the scriptures. Doing so brought so much peace and gave me supernatural strength to endure the great farewell.

I prayed through and the Lord gave me the truth to comfort my aching heart. Verses like Isaiah 26: 3, Proverbs 3: 5-6, and Philippians 4: 4-9 reminded me that God is on the throne and that I could trust Him during this time of transition.

What rules you

We live in difficult times and there is so much opposition to Christianity today. A sober mind is essential for mental stability through the trials and temptations we face. Purposely be a woman ruled by the Spirit and scriptures, not emotions or circumstances. The world is watching and God’s glory is at stake!

Colossians 2: 6-7 ~ As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so you walk in him: rooted and built up in him and anchored in faith, as you taught, rich in gratitude.
