What it means to study abroad now

The world is now facing the effects of COVID-19. It is safe to say that study abroad plans in 2020 will be affected, but their impact cannot be predicted and there is an air of uncertainty.

Current situation

UNITED STATES: There are some international students who are still in the US due to the unavailability of flights and have decided to stay behind to complete the remainder of the semester online. Like most countries, the US is following the trend towards working from home. IT companies in particular are increasingly looking for interns to work at home.

Canada: The IRCC recently announced that those students who plan to do so study in Canada can attend online courses from their home country for admission in May / June. Those students who have a study permit for admission in May / June but cannot travel due to the travel restrictions imposed can start their classes online and complete 50% of their course without negatively affecting their visa status. Although international students are required to take online courses, they will still be eligible for Canadian work permits after graduation.

UNITED KINGDOM: Most of the international students in the UK decided to return to their home countries. The universities were close to the end of their semester or were in the Easter break. A major trend has been either online courses or student return home. Universities are currently offering prospective students COVID-19-related scholarships, tuition fees, discounts, and waivers.

Ireland: The data for the various levels of the approval process are being revised. Students who applied for a visa for April admission have now been postponed to September admission. Some universities process applications for students without specific application documents. The 2 year residency option that Ireland offers will continue to exist.

Australia:: Universities in AustraliaTogether with the government, hardship fund has announced for everyone to reduce the risk of COVID-19. Universities offer and sponsor online programs. All kinds of technical assistance are available. Interactive scholarships are also offered. Some universities have decided to waive accommodation fees for up to 4-8 weeks. Students who have received their ECOE after paying the agreed fees are advised to wait for the High Commission of Australia to provide an update.

New Zealand: Classes in New Zealand universitieswere moved online. Those who are part-time healthcare workers were allowed to work more than 20 hours a week. It is widespread speculation that this trend will continue even after the lockdown ends. In addition, students who work in supermarkets can schedule additional hours without adversely affecting their visa status. 23approx As of April, New Zealand is on alert 3, which means 50% of people can go back to work provided social distancing norms are met.

Proficiency tests

Entrance exams like TOEFL, GRE, GMAT are now being carried out online. Universities are increasingly turning Duolingo into a platform for English exams. Some universities in Canada accept applications without an IELTS scorecard or grade sheet for the final year. Certain universities in Ireland accept IELTS scores 3 years instead of the usual 2 years. TOEFL ibt Home Edition tests are also taken into account. Whether or not these online tests are accepted by the immigration authorities is some clarity. Students who are looking study in New Zealand However, there is a risk that their IELTS will expire before they apply for admission in July. This can make an application independently, as such applications will still be considered. However, this does not apply to students who last longer than 12 months.


The I-20 form that was previously sent to prospective students study in the USACourier is now sent in an electronic format and is now referred to as eI-20. It is hoped that visa centers in the UK will remain open and students can expect their applications to continue to be considered.
Those who will travel by plane study in Canada must undergo the necessary medical tests. Students must also self-isolate for 14 days. However, students who do not have a place to self-isolate are not allowed to enter Canada. Those students who have a student visa in New Zealand or a Visa for Post Study Work will extend their visa until January 25thth
of September provided that their visas are about to expire. Students can apply for a visa study in Ireland These applications are valid online until the application centers are open.

Future predictions

Most likely, planned enrollment begins with the online study option for most courses, including international students from the first semester. Students might consider this an option.
