Many homeowners dream of large backyards with plenty of room for parenting, space to let pets roam free, or create the outdoor oasis they have always wanted. If you live in a house in Virginia Beach or the Hampton Roads area with limited backyard space, you may feel like those dreams are out of reach. However, having a smaller garden doesn’t mean you can’t have beautiful scenery that excites you to come home or have guests every day.
Here are some ideas to help make that dream come true:
Create different levels.
If you have a longer, narrow garden, creating different levels with a patio, concrete patio, or stone can make the space more appealing to the eye and provide you with zones for fun, relaxation, and outdoor dining. The same technique can be used for swimming pools and water games. You can also create different levels in your garden using raised beds or boxes.
Grow instead of out.
You don’t have to forego landscaping and flower beds to save space. Plants growing up (including on a trellis or other structure) instead of being outside can add more green and light colors to your space without taking up more space in the existing grassy areas. The right plants and shrubs for our Virginia coast climate will also give you more privacy and ease of maintenance.
Swap the grass for cobblestones.
If your main focus is on outdoor entertainment, you may want to use all of the space just for that. Unless you have a child or pet who needs soft grass to play with, you can completely cover your yard with well-designed paving stones, concrete, and gravel for alfresco dining, barbecues, or even a hot tub or pool. This approach works particularly well when combined with raised beds around a pool in a smaller garden.
Extend your outdoor lighting.
Make your yard bigger at night by adding more outdoor lighting to outside corners, along paths, and near seating areas. If you have a long, narrow garden, this can also help make it feel less scary after dark.
