Cool nights by the fire with friends and family are the best! Especially when you add smores! Fire features have always been a coveted item when designing a yard for entertaining us. It’s just special to gather around the fire.
When David Kopfmann founded Yardscapes, Inc. 46 years ago, there was such a wide variety of burn marks that weren’t there or were not so easily accessible. If you think back over the years, it was wild to see fire function evolve. I will cover different styles that we have installed over the years. We’ll start with the more traditional wood burning, fire ring, and fire pit styles that we typically install. I thought we love to be creative and I’ll come back to that in the end. Your non-traditional fire traits!
WOOD BURNING FIRE PITS:
When you get back to the basics, grab your own logs and start them on fire. It smells of fine wood burning and crackling in front of you. It can put you in a coma like a daze. Fall nights in Minnesota are the best! I picked a few to show you that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to build. Most of these were installed over a gravel floor for support. Most cities require your fire function to be installed at least 25 minutes from your home.

WOOD BURNING FIREPLACES:
These make a big impression and feel more like you’re sitting outside in your living room! However, they become much more expensive and labor intensive. A building permit must be drawn and filed for the construction of such a structure. Usually they require excavation of the site and then a concrete slab to support the frost foundations. Here is an example of the steps to install a fireplace.
…Now that you understand What goes into making one of these fireplaces, here are some more examples of fireplaces we have designed and built!
The ease of having a gas fire is amazing. Just press a switch and you have warmth and ambience immediately! Most gas fire features require a frost base if they are to be edged with mortar. It all depends on what type of stone and how heavy it is. To do this, an approved gas company must install the gas line, which is usually fed directly from the gas meter connected to a regulator, and then built into the fireplace.
Once the gas is installed, you have a lot of choices as to what type of material to use inside. If you want it to look like a traditional fire, we have beautiful and realistic wooden construction kits that are available in many different wood looks and shapes. If you prefer a more modern feel, choose a glass rock that comes in many different colors. The glass rock against the flames creates a cool reflection and the flame dances through the rocks. There are also different stones to fill, such as lava stone for a more contemporary feel. There are also many different ignition options in the gas installation. Wall switch, remote control or phone app to start your fire function. How easy it is!
