The University of Port Harcourt chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the federal government of being behind the ongoing secret employment of academic and non-academic staff at the university.
She also accused the federal government of exacerbating the university’s problems by failing to inaugurate the university’s government council despite the inauguration of 13 other federal universities in the country.
The chair of the chapter of the University of Port Harcourt of the ASUU, Dr. Austen Sado, speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt yesterday, said some people within the university system had kidnapped university employment and transparency and justice under the guise of the government had targeted publicity for the trial.
Sado noted that continued illegality would further exacerbate the university’s current crisis.
He said: “We are disappointed that the government has created a government council from 13 universities, but has completely omitted the constitution of a government council for the University of Port Harcourt.
“By neglecting or neglecting this, the government has given the impression that it supports the violation of an orderly procedure in the university system.
“If the government really intends to solve the myriad problems at the University of Port Harcourt and put the institution on the podium of excellence in teaching and research, then the government council is an indispensable part of this equation.
“We therefore call on President Muhammadu Buhari to form a government councilor for the University of Port Harcourt.”
Sado further stated that ASUU, as a critical stakeholder in the institution, cannot ignore actions that could affect the quality of teaching and research at the university.
He said: “Apparently, advertising for applications is smoke protection, and these applications should go to the trash.
“ASUU UNIPORT as a critical stakeholder at the university will not ignore this obvious violation, which can affect the quality of teaching, research and other administrative tasks at the university.
“We therefore ask the President to intervene to bring a sense of reason to this process.”
