Hello everybody! Monica Chavez here with a super easy furniture repair project.
I have a collection of vintage and antique sewing machines with tables in my pile of furniture. It was time we brought some refreshment.
We have decided to breathe new life into a tall and narrow sewing table Varathane Premium interior wood stain from Home Depot.
This sewing table in particular was found on a property sale for $ 5! FIVE DOLLARS.
This piece needed a lot of attention as it was very popular in its prime. I also wanted to take the opportunity to make it more my style. Varathane Premium Fast Dry Interior wood stain made of ebony would be just what i needed to get it there.
Deliveries
We gathered our supplies, including that Varathane wood stain, Water-based polyethylene in Varathan in clear satin, Eccentric sander and Grinding wheels of different grains, a Foam brush, lint-free clothing, Drop cloth, and drill disassemble the sewing table.
Preparation for stains
We removed the top table parts and hinges in order to properly sand / stain the parts.
In order to prepare the surface for the new stain, the weathered old stain layer had to be removed with a first Eccentric sander.
With different grains of Grinding wheels Successively from coarse to super fine, we get a clean and smooth finish on the wood.
We always sand in the direction of the wood grain.
Every part of the sewing table has been treated the same to remove the old stain.
After sanding off all of the pieces, we vacuumed up the dust and wiped everything off a lint-free cloth.
Applying Varathane Premium Interior Wood Stain
After stirring the stain thoroughly we have used one Foam brush to spread it generously on all sanded parts of the sewing table.
We allowed that stain Soak for 2-3 minutes and wipe with a lint-free cloth to remove the excess stain.
The coverage of the Varathane Premium is so good that only one coat is required. This Ebony Spot color is exactly what I was hoping for!
The longer you let the stain sit before wiping, the darker the color will be. I mean, just look at this nice wood grain.
Use of Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane
We let the wood stain dry for 1 hour before grabbing it Water-based topcoat. The Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane wanted to give us the protective finish a side table needs. Leaving the beautiful at the same time Ebony wood stain shine through the crystal clear layer.
With a clean Foam brush We applied the stirred polyurethane along the direction of the wood grain in a smooth, even layer.
This layer felt dry in 2 hours and gave us an abrasion and scratch resistant surface. After 48 hours the pieces were cured and ready to be reassembled.
Makeover complete
Before and after
My only regret is that I didn’t do this project sooner! This table quietly stores a vintage sewing machine but has a new purpose as the perfect end table.
If you too have a bunch of furniture that says your name, grab one Varathane Premium wood stain in a shade that matches your style!
