Sanitary is leakingWater leaks in your pipes can be a minor problem, but they can quickly become a major problem. Small leaks can lead to slow, even water damage over time, weaken the structure of your home and increase your water costs.

Leakage often occurs in and around fittings and devices such as sinks, showers and washing machines lead to constipation in your home plumbing. Serious leaks due to pipe bursts can be particularly costly and possibly more difficult to detect.

Most households consume an average of 350 liters of water per person per day. If you notice a high water consumption, which is stated in your bills, there may be a water leak. While visible leaks are easier to fix, detecting water leaks can help in situations where a pipe has burst and you need repairs.

Where leaks occur frequently

Pipes under the sink can often leak and cause damage over time. Toilets, showers and other bathroom fittings are also cause for concern. Water leaks in these areas are often due to loose seals that must be caulked again or replace.

Washing machine and dishwasher connections are other potential leaks, which are often determined by damp spots on the connecting walls.

The outside of your home can also have many potential leaks, including:

  • External valves and hoses
  • Shut-off valves and water pumps
  • Exposed pipes
  • Garden networking

If you notice an outdoor area near your home that is often damp or greener than expected, this may indicate an outdoor leak.

If you regularly check visible pipes for rust, kinks, or drops of water, you can find minor problems before they get bigger.

How to find a leak

While it can be difficult to find the direct source of a leak, Check your water meter can be an easy way to confirm that your home is losing water.

First switch off all water-carrying devices and fittings. Then go to the water meter on your property and read the numbers. After 15 minutes without water, read the water meter again. If the numbers have shifted, there is most likely a water leak.

If you think you may have a leak, you can do some simple checks for common problem areas.

An easy to check method if your cistern is leaking is to put a few drops of food coloring in the water tank. Leave the toilet for a few moments without rinsing to see if the dye goes through. If you have noticed that paint is flowing into the toilet bowl, you have a leak.

Other leaks in sinks, showers, and drains can be checked by checking for cracks and drops of water, or whether the water level drops when the drains are clogged.

Smaller leaks are usually easy to deal with. However, a leak due to a burst pipe in your pipe can be much more difficult to detect and repair.

Finding a leak in your walls, floor, or ceiling can require excavation or wall damage. If done by an inexperienced plumber, this can result in significant property damage.

A method used by experts to detect sanitary leaks is acoustic leak detection. This method uses advanced sound technology to detect vibrations caused by a leak, quickly locate the source, and avoid wasting time and unnecessary damage to property.

How to fix a leak

In the most serious cases, leaks due to pipe breaks and those that have caused structural damage over time must be remedied by a licensed and accredited Plumber.

A slight leak like a drip tap can be fixed by simply replacing the tap disc. Regardless of whether your leak is a large or a small task, it is important that it is repaired quickly to avoid further water damage to your property.

It is best to run a subsequent leak detection test about a week after your leak has been repaired to confirm that the repairs have been successful and that your home has no remaining leaks.

With the help of a professional installer, you can quickly and easily repair leaks in your home and avoid high operating costs associated with water damage.
