Jakub Martinec, Ph.D., is director of choral activities at Memorial University of Newfoundland, founding artist of the Atlantic Boychoir, the first provincial choir for boys and young men in Canada, and artistic director and conductor of the National Boychoir of Canada (NBCC).

Martinec has a Ph.D. In his musical education at the University of Western Ontario, his research focuses on a comparison of the European and North American perspectives of choral conducting, on studies of early Czech choral literature, and on educational strategies for teaching young male singers.

He was born in the Czech Republic and was artistic director of the renowned Czech boys’ choir. Martinec has recorded for national television and radio in the Czech Republic and directed numerous CDs and DVDs. his shot of Brittens A Christmas carols ceremony received the “Recording of the Month” award from the London-based Classical Music Web in 2004.

Martinec has performed with major orchestras, ensembles and musical personalities in some of the most famous concert halls and cathedrals in the world, including Meistersingerhalle, Nuremberg (2005, 2009, 2011, 2017), Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, USA (2004). Winspear Hall in Edmonton, Canada (2006), Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada (2012), Pantheon and Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome for the Vatican leaders (2009, 2010), Truro Cathedral, UK (2013) and regularly in the Rudolfinum Dvorak Hall and the Smetana Hall in Prague. With his choirs he played the opening concert of the choral cycle of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (2006) and performed at numerous international music festivals, including the Prague Spring Festival (2004, 2005) and the European Festival of Youth Choirs “Giuseppe Zelioli” (2003, 2012), AmericaFest Internationales Festival for boys and men choirs, including the VI. World Choir Symposium in Minneapolis (2002), the Festival d’Ambronay (2006), Central Europe (2008, 2009, 2013) and the highly acclaimed World Festival of Singing for Men and Boys (Prague, Hradec Kralove, 2004, 2008).

Martinec is also often asked to be a visiting clinician, juror and moderator, e.g. B. Cornwall Male Choral Festival, Great Britain (2013, 2019), Pemulwuy, Australia (2014), European Festival of Youth Choirs “Giuseppe Zelioli”, Italy (2014, 2016)), Podium, Canada (2014), ACE – Asian Education Conference, Japan (2015), ISME, United Kingdom (2016), Education Research Symposium – Merton College, Oxford, United Kingdom (2018). The 2020-2021 concert season brought Martinec as guest conductor to Italy, Thailand, the Czech Republic and Australia! Martinec has been the choir columnist of the Canadian Music Educator Journal.
