Things are crazy out there with school closings and so much uncertainty. I know it may seem crazy, but I want you to know YOU CAN HOMESCHOOL.
And it can look whatever you want. There are so many ways to go to school. Classic, Traditionally, Charlotte Mason, or Unschoolingjust to name a few. It’s going to feel like a giant leap for those of you who have been to traditional school, but it’s so doable. Yes, even if you work, yes, even if you are a single parent, yes, even if you have children with special needs. It is attainable.
As you have probably already noticed with the online school, the schools made us believe that our children need 8 hours of lessons. It’s just not true. A good part of that is class management, which alternates between classes and fluff.
So schools are closed or masks are required. What do we do now? Well we are going to schedule 2 hours a day to teach our kids and give them life skills for the rest of the day. It’s true, kids can learn everything they need in just a few hours a day, kindergarten through high school.
A few of my favorite parenting books at school to get you started:
Homeschooling for excellence by David and Micki Colfax – They home-schooled 4 sons and sent them to Ivy League schools only when it was raining.
The well-trained mind by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer – Homeschooling 4 kids, teaching at a college, farm animals, writing books and more. Susan Bauer knows how to bring many things under one roof and offer her children an excellent education. This book provides excellent curriculum recommendations and advice to get you started.
Homeschool burnout by Dr. Raymond S. Moore and Dorothy Moore – This book is not only for burned-out homeschoolers, but beginners too. He encourages you to let your children grow up and only teach them when they are ready to learn. No forcing handwriting for four year olds or forcing story ideas for six year olds. Dr. Moore gives you the freedom to mature the kids before you bring their skills out of them.
The successful Homeschool Family Handbook by Dr. Raymond Moore
