Three weeks before the travel restrictions eased and the date for overnight stays was confirmed, I really wanted to book a campsite.

We wanted to stay in the southwest and finally use our VW T5, which had been pretty parked since the fall we bought it.

Find out what you need to know when buying a motorhome.

I found a website with availability in North Devon, made the booking and then got a call to say they were actually full. No! So I started my search again and found Perran Sands.

It is a holiday park in Haven on Cornwall beach. Perfect! And luckily, we bagged their last euro playing field for the first full weekend after the lock in England eased. Hooray!

In case of doubt, we have booked and paid for our own stay here. I write about it because we had a great time and I wanted to recommend it to you.

What can you expect at Perran Sands after the closure?

Haven has renamed its breaks Haven Hideaway Holidays in 2020 and 2021. They continue to offer vacations in the great outdoors, but have additional measures in place to ensure the safety of guests.

Some facilities, restaurants, and entertainment venues will not be available in 2020, but are expected to reopen next year.

Booking and check-in

We booked online and all of our vacation information was sent via email and text. We had to confirm details of all the guests in our group, our vehicle registration number and a few days beforehand our arrival time.

Haven has a check-in website where you can collect all of this information and email or text when you want to add or download something new.

If you are camping or staying in your own caravan, the system will notify you that there is a PDF card on which you can stay on site. If you click on it, the page is empty. Do not worry. When we arrived, we were given our parking space number.

On-site facilities after the block

Since we lived in our VW T5 without our own bathroom, we had checked beforehand whether the Tourer shower blocks would be open on the camping and caravan park.

I was so impressed with the current cleaning system. There were staff outside the two blocks of the site throughout the day to control the number of people entering and there were markings on the floor to help people keep away.

Every toilet, shower and wash basin was disinfected after 7:30 a.m. until early evening.

The well-stocked supermarket on site allowed five people at the same time and had a one-way system. Employees with PSA stood at the door and offered hand disinfectants and instructions.

Some of the park’s restaurants were open to go, and there were some socially distant activities like segways.

The site’s usual entertainment program will end in 2020 and the pools are currently closed, but the playgrounds are open. There is also plenty of space to play on the edge of the campsite, which is surrounded by sand dunes.

There was signage everywhere, reminding you to wash and disinfect your hands, keep your distance, and get a cough.

Haven clearly take the safety of their guests and employees seriously. We were impressed and felt absolutely safe.

So what about our other impressions of Haven Perran Sands Holiday Park?

Camping and touring pitches

We have booked the very last available euro pitch for our dates. It was a large, level playing field with hedges and attractive flower beds at the end of each row. We had a power connection and a water connection right next to our van.

This pitch cost £ 44 a night before school holidays started in July.

Waste disposal facilities and sinks are located in the environmentally friendly shower blocks with green roofs and water and energy saving technology. There are signs outside that tell you all about it.

The campsite also has grass and hard pitches with and without electricity. These are marked in a large flat space between sand dunes. There are wooden bollards and streets between the rows, but not between the individual parking spaces.

The campsite has its own adventure playground and right next to it is a large area for walks with dogs.

The rules for ports are to keep noise down after 10 p.m., and most of the pitches near us had calmed down, though it felt like the sun had just set.

Other accommodation

There must be more than 800 other mobile homes, chalets, beach houses and glamping tents in the Haven Perran Sands Holiday Park. So accommodation suitable for everyone. Some of the mobile homes had a breathtaking view of the coast.

The small on-site supermarket is in the landscaped central center, surrounded by restaurants with outdoor seating and umbrellas. It offers everything you need for your vacation at reasonable prices, so you can easily take care of yourself without going to an external supermarket.

There is also a gift shop selling ice cream, souvenirs, games and beach clothes.

Haven Perran Sands restaurants

We didn’t try the restaurants or takeaways on our weekends, but Perran Sands has several to choose from. There is pizza, fish and chips and bar food.

In normal times, the Haven Perran Sands Holiday Park offers a full program of day and evening entertainment as well as indoor and outdoor pools with channels and a lazy river.

We missed that, but still had a lot to do as the play parks were open and we bought a few games like Boule to play next to our RV. The arcade was also open.

Perran Sands Beach

The holiday park offers direct access to the beaches of Perran Sands and Penhale, right next to the main beach of Perranporth. But prepare your thighs for a workout to achieve it!

The way to the beach

You have to go down a steep zigzag path to reach the golden sand and surf. It is possible to do this with a stroller or mobility scooter, but there is no promenade below – it leads directly to the beach.

Family walking on Perran Sands beach

Lifeguards were on duty from 10 a.m. when we visited them, which was comforting. However, it is still very important to keep an eye on the children in the sea. While we were on the beach, a child was rescued after being driven far outside the swimming zone.

Bring bodyboards or surfboards for fun in the waves. Mr Tin Box tried to use one of our paddle boards, but the surf in the North Atlantic was too rough.

Our Perran Sands Holiday Park rating

We loved our weekend stay at Perran Sands and felt that despite the restrictions after the closure, there was just enough to do for a few days.

If we had stayed longer, we would have ventured outside the grounds to explore the area and revisit some of our favorite days in Cornwall. Perran Sands is in a great location.

We believe that Haven has successfully implemented the COVID-19 measures.
