Lots of people ask me how to have their own travel blog and I know you’re here too because you’re curious! Congratulations on your decision to start a travel blog! Today I am going to guide you step by step on how to create your own travel blog even if you are a beginner.
I started blogging back in 2006 and I could say I’m pretty much a “veteran” when it comes to that. If you know my first website, you can scroll through the archive.org wayback machine and find most of the things I posted there 14 years ago.
Anyway, I’ve transitioned from a personal diary blog to a fashion blog over the years. In 2016, I finally made the decision to switch while traveling because that’s what I really love. I have received several sponsorships and got paid by blogging during my 14 years of blogging (until today, of course).
So are you ready to start your own travel blog and make money off of it? Here’s how!
Step 1: choose your niche
The first step in starting a blog is to determine your own niche. Are you sure you want a travel blog, a fashion blog, a tech blog, a finance blog, and so on?
Once you have selected a category, you can continue to “niche”. I consider mine a “general” travel blog so that I can cover everything under travel.
Here are some ideas for travelers:
- Luxury travel
- Budget travel
- Couple travel
- Solo trip
- Family travel
- work while traveling abroad
- van life journey
The above are just a few examples that you can run, but if you don’t already have anything specific in mind. It’s okay. Just write what you want and you will eventually find what specific niche you really want.
Step 2: Choose a domain name
The next step is to determine a domain name. So it is important to choose a good one.
TIP: Think long term. You don’t want a domain name like “20 Something Travel” and after a few years it will no longer be relevant because you are no longer 20.
Step 3: get a hosting
After choosing a good domain name, you need to register it and get web hosting. There are actually a lot of pretty ones good web hosting company out there. Most of the time, you can also choose to purchase your domain name from these companies along with your web hosting.
Step 4: design your blog
A standard blog design, either WordPress or Blogger, will be installed on your blog. Don’t worry, blog topics can be changed.
If you want a more personalized website design, you can hire a web designer or buy a blog theme online. You can customize the colors and fonts later. For fonts, I usually go to the Font Packages resource. They offer premium Fonts giveaways that you can choose for your travel blog.
Step 5: start writing
And you’re done setting up your blog! It just needs content, so write to your heart’s content.
Don’t know what to write? Here are some ideas you can do to get started:
- Travel guide (accommodation, activities, eating habits, etc.)
- Top 10 Things to Do in a Specific Destination
- Packing list for a specific destination
- Travel tips or hacks (how to save money, how to book cheap flights, etc.)
- Reviews of hotels you’ve stayed in or tours you’ve taken
Remember, don’t be afraid to write. Go on! By the way, don’t forget to create your social media channels. Creating such a method is one of the most cost-effective ways to get your readers started while you are still getting started. You can also share your blog posts with your friends.
It’s a wrap!
So that’s it! How to start a travel blog.
Now go ahead, enjoy and make money on your new blog. I’ll be doing another post on how to make money blogging. So keep your eyes open!
But making money blogging doesn’t stop there! You have to learn something new every day. This industry is changing every day so you really need to offer the best that you can offer your readers. You can read other blogs, ask for help and offer help, improve your skills and get there.
Here is something for you: “On your path to success, never forget that you cross many rivers. Yes, you are! And each of these rivers contains crocodiles that may try to intimidate you. Never be afraid; keep sailing and you will get there.” “ – Israelmore Ayivor
