Garden pots – How to use decorative pots in your garden – Successful garden design Garden Design

Garden pots Today there is an amazing selection of garden pots. Everything from classic terracotta to modern glazed urns in various shapes. Sizes and colors.

Pots can be a major focus, regardless of whether they contain plants or not. If you have a nice urn shape, they are very suitable to just stand empty between the plants, as shown in the photos above.

Option 1 – group pots

When grouping things in the garden, a group of 3-5 or an odd number usually looks best. But I think, with empty pots, two next to each other in different sizes look really good and break the odd number rule. However, if you are plant the potsthen the rule applies. Odd numbers together look better.

Adding a selection of flowering plants in pots around the garden and on the patio can help extend the look of your garden throughout the year. Particularly helpful at the beginning or end of summer and into autumn.

But also without plantsPots can give a touch of color and a solid shape to a planting edge, which brings clarity to the planting. You don’t just have to use them to put plants on the patio.

Garden urn on the side
An urn on the side looks good, surrounded by cobblestones

You can also use the urn-shaped pots on their cobblestone side, as shown in the photo on the left, which creates an interesting focus.

If you have pots on your patio, they tend to look better in groups.

A color scheme also helps make the grouping clearer rather than having an odd selection of different types of pots.

If you have a strange selection of pots that people have given you and collected over the years, one trick to making them work well together is to have certain plants that you repeat by planting in the pots. So for example Alchemilla mollis This is mixed with everything in different types and styles of pot. The repetition of the plant brings clarity to the mix of different types of pots.

Option 2 – strategic placement

The picture below is not a perfect example due to the variety of pot styles, shapes and sizes used. Apart from that, you can see how well they give shape and eye-catching focal points that draw your eyes to the bench.

Pots can be great focal points. The trick is to place them on a visual journey through the garden to an important area such as a seat or a gazebo.

I cannot stress enough how helpful a solid form can be to make planting borders clearer. You can be miracle workers!

Which pot style should you choose for your garden?

Try to choose garden pots that are in the same style as your garden, i.e. traditional or modern. If you have a selection of pots that don’t fit the style of your garden, you should paint them. Even the most boring old terracotta pots can be completely transformed with one coat of paint.

Colored garden pots
Painted terracotta pots look great on the floor as well as on the walls

Pots also do not have to be banished at ground level. You can hang them on window ledges, in metal frames or on the wall. Or simply attach it to the wall, as in the Cordoba patio gardens in Spain, as shown in the first of the three images above.

The pots used in the patio gardens are slightly suspended from the wall with a small piece of wood behind each and have been watered very carefully to ensure that they do not stain these beautiful white walls.

There are many types of hanging pots you can choose from and they don’t always have to hang on a wall!

Make the most of your vertical space

Strong fences and walls can provide an excellent backdrop for vertical planting schemes. You can grow ornamental plants, herbs and some fruit and vegetables and use the last place in your garden.

There are many ways you can use your vertical space as shown in this video

Properly used garden pots can really liven up any garden and make a great gift if you don’t know what you need for a garden-loving friend.

BUT be warned, features like pots won’t give you a breathtaking garden – You must first determine the correct design layout. If you don’t know how to do it then …
