The House Committee for Basic Education and Services has asked the Federal Government not to cancel 2020 West African Senior Secondary Certificate (WASSCE) exam. The committee chair, Julius Ihonvbere (APC-Edo), made this known in a statement.
According to him, the position of the committee is that it should not be canceled. He said the committee was amazed by the announcement by Education Minister Adamu Adamu that Nigerian students would not attend WASSCE 2020.
The lawmaker said the minister had not informed the country if the position matched with other West African leaders or in consultation with the audit committees, state governments, and other interest groups in the education sector.
He said the reversal is not good for the country as it will create further confusion in the education sector and will frustrate students.
Legislators recommended that WAEC quadruple its supervisors and use all classrooms and event centers to conduct the review and comply with the COVID 19 protocols. Working with the Ministries of Environment and Health to find a way to fumigate classrooms, provide buckets of water and soap, and face masks for students
He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to instruct all ministers to return to their countries to work with the governors to ensure the smooth implementation of the policy and the audit.
