Self-catering accommodation, Western Cape

By Roxanne Reid
If you’re like me, you need a few days now and then to stay strengthened and healthy. But what happens when the wallet chains are tight? Fortunately, there are many Budget friendly self catering accommodation in the Western Cape where you can stay without haggling your house.

South AfricaThe Western Cape is great, a place with vineyards and vineyards, open sections of the Karoo steppe with sheep, big skies and a quirky character. It stretches towards the mountains, rivers and oceans of the Overberg where you will find the southernmost point of Africa and landscapes with yellow rapeseed fields. It rumbles part of the way along the scenic Garden Route with its forests, lakes and beaches. And don’t forget the west coast, where the atmosphere is relaxed and the seafood is excellent.
If you

  • I have compiled a list of 18 self-catering accommodations in the Western Cape that can sleep two people for R1100 – or less – per night.
  • All prices I have quoted are prices outside of peak times and do not reflect the Christmas / New Year increases in the high season.
  • Please inquire about special offers before booking. Some of these Western Cape accommodations offer significant (20-40%) winter and spring discounts on the prices listed here. In some cases, these offers can run until September or November. Do yourself a favor and check.
  • At the beginning of each snippet there is a link to the accommodation company’s own website to make it easier for you to make a booking request.
  • Note that not all of them – e.g. CapeNature and SANParks – may have been reopened after Covid-19 was closed, but it is definitely good to dream and plan ahead.
  • I have placed an * asterisk next to the places that I have experienced myself. The others were all recommended by friends from their personal experience.
  • I have listed regions and accommodations alphabetically so that I cannot be accused of favoritism!

What is not to be loved about CapeNature’s eco / sustainability ethics? Gamkaberg nature reserve between Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn in the Karoo? Each eco-lodge has safari tents. If you book one of them, no other party is booked with you, so you get the space for yourself. The tents are on wooden decks and have real beds with safari chairs to relax on the deck. There are common washes with hot showers and waterless toilets. (If you hate waterless, you might prefer Tierkloof or Xamis Flush Loos.)
