A man of superior talent will go to pieces
if he stays in the same place forever!
– Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Mozart was a man with many facets. Obviously he was deeply gifted musically. He composed more than 600 works of all contemporary styles and is considered one of the greatest classical composers of all time. But did you know that he’s quite a traveler too?
Not least thanks to his talent, Mozart had seen most of Europe when most of us were just starting elementary school. Together with his sister Maria Anna, the young Mozart went on several tours through Europe and performed as a child prodigy. At the age of six, Mozart visited Maximilian II’s court in Bavaria and never stopped touring until he took up a job in Salzburg, his hometown, eleven years later. Even then, his work often led him across Europe and finally settled in Vienna.
We read the advice of the Roman philosopher Seneca that travel stimulates the mind, and it seemed to have this effect on Mozart. Of course, he was not the most humble man and suggested that travel could not have this effect on everyone by saying:
“A man of ordinary talent will always be ordinary whether he is traveling or not; but a man of superior talent will go to pieces if he stays in the same place forever! ”
About the photo
Vienna is not a native, but very proud of its adoptive son. You can find Mozart markers (and souvenirs!) Everywhere in the city. But none is as great as the Mozart monument in the Burggarten. Funny fact: the statue was erected in 1953, but the fundraiser was completed 75 years earlier! It took a long time to decide on the perfect design and the right location. And then came the Second World War when the almost completed statue was damaged in the bombing of Vienna in 1945. The monument was finally erected eight years later.
