National science education experts K-12 bring ideas and inspiring guidance to educators Preparation for returning to school and practical lessons in uncertain times

Carolina Biological announced the release of “Closing the distance in distance learning, “A three-part series of white papers that examines distance learning in science in the age of COVID-19 and provides a way forward for school districts and their science teachers. In the first work, readers learn the vocabulary of distance learning in the age of COVID-19. Commonly used educational terms are being redefined to reflect strategies for successful science education. Educators learn how to interpret techniques such as teacher-led classes, teacher-centered classes, student-centered classes, and independent classes for the current situation when students are six feet or more miles apart.

During the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year, Kristen Dotti, a leading national educational advisor, was in the trenches who helped deeply affected New York teachers develop as they adjusted familiar strategies for distance learning best practices. In the first work, educators can learn from their experiences by defining the terms and describing how practical science lessons can be conducted.

The second white paper addresses methods for effective scientific learning from a distance. Hedi Baxter Lauffer, science education advisor and co-director of the Wisconsin Fast Plants® program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, works with Dotti to explore the socio-emotional learning aspects that teachers need to consider in this unique time. She examines how students develop authentic laboratory skills when working remotely or individually in a classroom. She thinks about how she can motivate students when they leave school or have to do a laboratory at school.

The series ends with an analysis of the advantages Distance learning according to scientific standards, a topic that is rarely discussed in the teaching community. In the last work, it is discussed whether some students successfully carry out laboratory tests remotely and work together virtually. Brett Molding, current director of the Utah Partnership for Effective Science Teaching and Learning and award-winning educator, makes an important contribution in this article.
