As electric motorcycles become more and more profitable, the dream of alternative fuels that are safer and cheaper than gasoline continues. But will anything work? Bikesure takes a look at some possible future fuels.

While it is certainly possible to use hydrogen as a fuel, the amount required is far greater than what can be produced by simple electrolysis of water – in fact, the energy requirement for this is far greater than the energy that can be obtained from simply gaseous hydrogen.
That hasn’t stopped a number of people from solving the problem and occasionally even demonstrating these supposedly pioneering engines. Not surprisingly, none of these have been independently verified and the majority of inventors have been successfully prosecuted for fraud. This is either a sign that the almighty conspiracy that suppresses this knowledge is extremely efficient, or that the engines will not work if they exist.
Vehicles that combine internal combustion engines and electric motors have already started to create a niche as a good happy medium between reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and not killing your battery. This niche has not yet expanded significantly to include motorcycles, but some hybrid scooters and a regular procession of concepts have been shown. There has been some excitement lately when patents for a Kawasaki hybrid motorcycle have been found. However, these date from 2017, so that it acts more as a placeholder for future developments than is to be expected in the near future.

LPG, sometimes known as LPG, is made from fossil fuels, but produces less carbon dioxide and particles when burned, making it less polluting. It’s also cheaper than gasoline, but also less available – but it’s actually available. The need for pressurized fuel cans is again the main obstacle to adding to motorcycles, although there are some brave souls who have made the leap.

That said, fuel cells that run out of hydrogen have long been discussed as the next big thing for engines, and it is certainly possible, but until there is a breakthrough in storage technology, mounting them on motorcycles will be quite risky.
Scooters could be a safer platform because it is more possible to shield the fuel tank and their lower speed reduces the risks. Another problem is the lack of infrastructure to refuel. In 2017, the city police began testing seven Suzuki Bergman scooters equipped with hydrogen fuel cells and located at a gas station. A maximum range of 75 miles to a tank keeps them competitive for urban delivery range. However, this lack of infrastructure requires significant investments for companies that want to operate a fleet of scooters with hydrogen. Until this changes, hydrogen-powered motorbikes will remain largely a curiosity.
Sure, if you find a motorcycle with a diesel engine, you can technically switch to biodiesel instead. There are several reasons why diesel motorcycles have not started, including generally horrific power-to-weight ratios for engines that fit a motorcycle, sound like a tractor, and so on. If the easiest way to purchase a biodiesel motorcycle is to steal it from the US Marine Corps, you will likely need to find alternatives.
The search for solutions using different fuels will undoubtedly continue, but for most alternatives that previously require pressure storage, the electric bike is the only alternative that has a real chance of questioning the predominance of combustion.
The problem is that only the requirement for safe power generation is brought back to a level – charging your bike from the power grid is not a REAL solution, since power generation and the industrial processes that support it are some of the biggest sources of emissions. And that’s before you start considering the ethical concerns surrounding the production of rare earth minerals and chemicals that modern batteries and electronic devices require.
The good news is that modern motorcycles and scooters already have fairly efficient engines that use less fuel than cars, so motorcycle owners can largely get off the hook on the blame for their transportation-related CO2 emissions.
