Top tips for applying for a UK Tier 4 student visa Uk Immigration

Students from outside the European Economic Area (“EEA”) can study at a UK academic institution with a Tier 4 student visa, which is a point-based system in accordance with immigration regulations. In order to successfully apply for the visa, applicants must be offered a course place by an educational provider who has a valid Tier 4 sponsor license. The Tier 4 sponsor must provide the applicant with confirmation of study acceptance (“CAS”) to apply for a Tier 4 student visa, and without a valid CAS the application will be automatically rejected. Applicants must also demonstrate that they are real students and do not only use this visa route to enter the UK for other reasons. It is important that Tier 4 applications are properly prepared and clearly demonstrated that they have the required number of points. It is vital that you hire our immigration solicitors in London to prepare your application, as our in-depth document review process and detailed legal presentation ensure that every case has the best chance of success. How long is a UK student visa valid for?

The UK Tier 4 student visa is valid for the duration of the course. Applicants can arrive in the UK up to 1 week in advance if the course is 6 months or less, or up to 1 month in advance if the course is longer than 6 months before the start of their course.

It is possible to extend the Tier 4 student visa if the applicant has successfully completed their bachelor’s degree and then wants to earn their master’s degree. It is important that they can show academic progress when applying for a new visa to study a new course (i.e. applicants cannot study 3 different bachelor courses because they have the same final level). Applicants can also apply for a new student visa if they find a new course and receive a valid CAS within the blackout period if their original Tier 4 visa has been shortened for any reason.

How much bank credit is required for a UK student visa?

As with other point-based system applications, Tier 4 applicants must have a certain number of points for the maintenance (fund) requirement according to the Immigration Regulations Appendix C.. The amount of child support for a Tier 4 student depends on where he is going to study, whether the education provider offers accommodation on campus (i.e. the required child support is higher in London than in the rest of the country) and the course subject. International students must also have sufficient funds to pay full tuition fees for an academic year or for the entire course if it is less than a year. The calculation of the exact amount of funds requires an assessment of the individual circumstances of each applicant. Therefore, our Immigration Solicitors in London will be happy to arrange advice to provide tailored immigration advice.

Can I work on a UK student visa?

Yes, most Tier 4 students are allowed to work on their visas, but there are likely to be restrictions. The permitted working hours are printed on the migrant’s biometric residence permit (“BRP”). Usually the maximum working time during the semester is 20 hours a week, which can increase during the holiday season.

How much does a student visa to the UK cost?

At the time of writing, applying for a Tier 4 student visa is £ 348 and must be from outside the UK. Relatives applying through the application will be charged an additional £ 348 per person.

Applicants and their families are also required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (“IHS”). The IHS fee is currently £ 400 for each year of the visa duration (i.e. a three year visa is £ 1,200 for IHS). Applicants can use the IHS tester to confirm how much IHS has to be paid and this will also be calculated automatically at the time of payment (before the online home office registration fee is paid). However, as mentioned earlier, the government has announced that this will increase from October 1, 2020.

Corona virus update for UK Tier 4 student visa applications

UK Visa and Immigration regularly updates its Orientation guide in light of COVID 19 restrictions around the world. At the time of writing, there are temporary policy concessions for Tier 4 students and sponsors. Some of the main concessions are as follows:

  • Students do not have to report absences due to COVID-19.
  • Sponsors do not need to withdraw their Tier 4 sponsorship if a student is unable to participate for more than 60 days due to Covid-19, but intends to continue their studies.
  • Sponsors can continue to sponsor existing Tier 4 students who continue their distance learning regardless of whether they are in the UK or in another country.
  • New international students who have not yet applied for a Tier 4 student visa, but would like to start a course that is fully distance-learning abroad do not need Tier 4 sponsorship. This is because they are not to the UK;
  • Tier 4 student visa applications can still be made with a CAS that was previously issued if the course start date has changed or the CAS itself has expired.
  • ID documents can now be submitted digitally because it is not conducive to public health advice to view the original documents at this time.
