Week 13 was Michelle Willi’s week!
This Monday, 50 participants tuned in to our Stemillions Activity Pack (also known as the Meal Plan), which is based on the inspiring Head of Technology Operations at Vodafone. Michelle Willis. Core Stemette Jazmin introduced the role model this week. The girls were very excited to meet Michelle and learn about Vodafone. Since this was our last menu in STEM mode, we packed as many activities as possible in series. The participants first met Michelle and asked her questions about what it was like to work at Vodafone and her extensive career in technology. We then played a game of bingo with a technology theme, we used terms like Firewall, broadband and LANThe girls learned the definitions of these technical terms and then Jazmin called out the definitions for a virtual bingo game! We then gave the girls 2 minutes to run through the house and write down everything that was connected to the internet. We had numbers from 5 to 49! We talked to Michelle about what a world would look like without a broadband connection and stressed how important (and cool) her job is. It was very sad to say goodbye at the end of the session. We can’t wait to run more programs like this in the future!
When we asked the participants what they liked best about the session, they said:
“I enjoyed playing BINGO with my brother and mother, even though we didn’t win, overall it was really fun!”
“It was great to see the opportunities for girls at Vodafone. It inspired me professionally! “
“I really enjoyed making contacts. In this difficult time, it is very nice to see other people, to speak to others and still learn.”
On Wednesday, 70 participants came to Event Stemette Charlotte when she was a role model Natalie and Charlotte by Vodafone to lead a session on artificial intelligence, machine learning and chatbots. The role models introduced the participants to the various components of AI and machine learning. They taught the girls terms and definitions and the girls had to create their own chatbot personas! The participants learned about the role that these technologies play at Vodafone and got to know Natalie and Charlotte and what their professional roles mean at Vodafone.
Here are some quotes from the girls who attended the session about what they liked best:
“I loved finding out about the different people that are needed to create a chatbot. You can do everything from technical work and design to research! However, the most important thing is to work together and communicate as a team. “
“I loved hearing about artificial intelligence and machine learning! It was really interesting to learn something about Toby too! Thank you very much, Team Stemette. I really enjoyed it !!! “
“The interactivity with the audience. The speakers always listened to our feedback and answered questions throughout the session. “
“How committed the speakers were, what they told us about their lives, how they dealt with each other (different opinions on pineapples!). I also liked it when they answered people’s questions because that way you can find out more. “
195 people attended the live session on Friday this week hosted by Head Stemette Anne-Marie. Anne-Marie was created by Product Architect, Luisa Tamrakar and coordination and support specialist Roshni Mistry. Both Luisa and Tamrakar came to Vodafone through the Technology Graduate Scheme, which really made the role models accessible to the public. The participants found out about everyone opportunities Vodafone offers this to young people and they got to know the career opportunities of the role models and everyday life at Vodafone. It was the last STEM fashion session, so we had a big farewell at the end. We can’t believe how fast it went and it was incredible to end the program with wonderful Vodafone role models. The participants also left great feedback for this session.
“Asking questions was very useful and it was incredibly interesting and inspiring to hear from a lot of people!”
“Hear from the inspiring women of Vodafone who learn about their career choices and their typical workday”
“I enjoyed Roshni’s lecture and when she explained that she was self-taught in Python.”
“Learn what a solution and product manager does because my father is one, but I never really knew what someone was doing.”
We also received great feedback from week 13!
