June is here, the garden is running away, half baked and brittle from too much earlier sun, the other half wild and going into the light, more about that soon, I promise – but paint today! Every time I hear new colors are added to that Atelier Ellis color cardI get very excited. The playful themes and magical inspiration behind each hue make sure it’s interior colors that will make your heart sing, and that is exactly what this new collection called WONDER does.
‘These colors were created to remind us of the optimism of youth, positive memories and halcyon days. Colors that are both naive and vivid, full of wonder and delight, looking back to look forward, and pure, simple emotions. Each color is inspired by everyday experiences and the moments of wonder and curiosity that are at the heart of what it means to be human. ‘Since I’m strict with myself, this time I took the liberty of falling on two colors. Oh let’s call it three, Agnes is divine (see below)! ‘Tea & Toast’ (above) – a deliciously cozy medium brown, made of hot bread and butter and deep, rich tea and ‘Loom & Dye’ (first picture in the post) – the magical dressing box that is lost in historical pieces of clothing – a warm medium pink with a gray undertone.I admit that I have a scandalous collection of tester pots that we use as backgrounds for photo shoots and for painting small items like frames etc. And a few liters that I haven’t put on the walls yet! When I heard that these new colors were coming out, I knew I had to exercise some restraint. Agnes and the other seven colors are introduced and described below so that you too can fall for them.‘Milk’ – A soft, pampered and warm white.
Solstice – Sunlight shines through the eyelids on the first warm days and escape outside. A soft, faded, sunlit pink with a hint of brown.‘Hari’ – the sepia tones of Polaroid photographs and Halcyon, sunny days and ‘Agnes’ – first coins, sparkling party smocks and Agnes Martin’s meditative paintings.
‘Winifred Green’ – The joyful color coding of Winifred Nicholson. A soft, calming green.
‘Leafmeal’ – A deep but soft black with tones of umber and green. The joy of playing in the dirt and the muddy overtones of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem Spring & Fall.
‘Rubus’ – Picking berries and jams and cakes. A faded, beautifully worn raspberry.‘Weeping Dove’ – A soft, elegant, peaceful gray.
“All of the colors are deeply pigmented to create unique hues that provide a calm, joyful backdrop for people at home and in life and help them tell their unique stories the way they want.
The colors that reflect the simple-useful-beautiful aesthetic of Atelier Ellis are deeply rooted in nature, as are personal memories, markings and fragments. Inspired by the way we live in nature, in cities and in society, the colors can soften a modern apartment or give a traditional house full of antiques and ephemera a new classicism. ‘Ellis Paint colors are created by Cassandra Ellis and made by her friends in Mylands, Britain’s oldest family-run paint company. The 100% water-based, deeply pigmented colors have been carefully formulated using the best traditional and modern techniques with minimal VOC, making for a beautiful and safe home.
