What are my main concerns after the ban? Well, I’m not too worried about my streaky hair or the fact that loungewear is my staple for my wardrobe. But I’m concerned that at the same time that I became a happy hermit, the rest of the world has learned a wealth of new skills and can now walk 5 km without stopping. What I can offer is our guide to easy installation of decking.
1. What material did we choose?
Did we first choose composite materials or wood? Well, composite is certainly the preferred option. It works well in damp Irish weather, lasts longer, is easy to install and requires little maintenance. But it’s a little bit more expensive, so we chose what’s on our bank account … wood.
2. What did we need?
- Bars (don’t worry if you don’t know how many, just ask enough for the project)
- Terrace screws
- Breathable weed tissue
- Patio oil
- Pavement sand
We ordered from Mc Mahon’s building material and in total it cost us 550 €. For an 18 square meter deck that costs 30 euros per square meter. We asked for the offer on a Tuesday, ordered it on Wednesday and all materials were delivered on Friday morning.
3. How did we do it?
Our patio design was a very simple rectangle, which means no cutbacks, no waste and no arguments about where we went wrong. We chose the longest deck boards we could get, 4800mm to fit in a 3800mm wide room. We scraped off the top layer of stone before we leveled the area. As soon as that was done, we measured on the bars. ** TOP TIP ** You can never be too careful when measuring. Do this a few times before committing to cutting wood!
After we cut our beams, we removed the breathable weed tissue and then constructed the frame. This was the most difficult part because the area was narrow and surrounded by the curb on two sides.
4. What happened next?
Well, that was the hardest part! We started laying the flooring and it was easy. We have the boards 3 mm apart. New boards are also shrinking a bit, and that’s exactly what has happened since then.
Once the deck was finished, we had a few days to test different locations and add additional deck bolts where we needed to. The topping has not yet been oiled because boards are sometimes treated with a coating at the source, and industry advises to leave it on for a few weeks. So that’s what we did, and we’ll just enjoy these sunny days to relax.
5. How long did it take?
The materials arrived on a very hot Friday, so right after dinner on Friday evening we started scraping and moving stones while it was cool. The next morning at 8 a.m. we started building the frame and then we were all finished and sat on it at 2 p.m.!
