What to do before you network – – : CAREER

We all know that networking is a very essential part of job hunting as it increases the chances of success for your job hunting. In this article, I want to share with you a few steps that need to be taken before you start networking. These steps are important because they can help you develop an effective strategy that generates results.

1. Identify people on your network
The first step is to identify the people in your network and highlight key players. Get your phone or address book and list:

Your personal contacts. This can be anyone, including:

  1. Friends
  2. family
  3. Parents of your children’s friends
  4. Parents of your friends
  5. Relatives of your friends
  6. Club members (country club, swimming club, sports club)
  7. Associations
  8. neighbours
  9. Members of the sports team
  10. Social media connections

Professional contacts. People in this category include:

  1. Current employees
  2. Previous employees
  3. Previous managers
  4. consultant
  5. Vendors and suppliers
  6. pensioner
  7. Participants in seminars, conferences or workshops
  8. Entrepreneurs
  9. Competitor
  10. Customers / customers
  11. Venture capitalist
  12. Members of industry associations
  13. Contacts you made at congresses and job fairs

Extend your circle a little further. Think of third-party contacts you may know, such as:

  1. Accountant
  2. doctors
  3. Real estate agent
  4. Financial advisor and banker
  5. lawyers
  6. dentists
  7. Mortgage banker / broker
  8. Insurance agents
  9. Travel agency
  10. School friends and teachers
  11. College classmates and friends
  12. Contacts of the alumni association
  13. Classmates of the graduate school
  14. Other alumni of your schools
  15. Employee of the university career internship
  16. Former professors and consultants
  17. Community groups
  18. People you met while volunteering
  19. Health club members

That’s more people on your network than you originally thought, right?

2nd Start organizing your network
Step 2 is to organize your network. Go through the contacts you listed and create a robust network list.

It is always best to use a spreadsheet to categorize and organize all contacts. Add a column for each first name, last name, job title, industry, phone number, email, social media handle, etc.

Add a column for any notes or interactions you remember to highlight each of your contacts. This also makes contact more personal.

3rd Keep track of those you have helped
Mark contacts in your master network list that you have previously helped or worked with. Most people are happy to give back a favor and recommend you for a position that you are qualified for. All it takes is a simple request.
Contact this group first.

Once you know your network well, you will be more confident and comfortable when you contact your contacts. You must actively develop and build up your contact network in the further course.
