Since yesterday and because of the widespread corona cases in the education system, they have changed the rule about which schools to close. In the beginning it was when three students and / or employees tested positive. Since schools with one case were effectively closed (or closed – ugh!) By the parent associations and the problem is bigger than expected, all schools have to be closed with a positive person and all students and teachers have to be tested.
Today 36 schools across the country have been closed, including the DD School. Nationwide there are around 10,000 people in quarantine – and these are only those who have registered, but not family members who are in quarantine with them, like me.
We received a message from the school that when opening, only children with documented negative test results are left behind. We don’t know when that will be. At the moment they are asking everyone to be tested. I assume that they will only make decisions if they know the extent of the problem.
Of course, we all know that a negative test tomorrow doesn’t mean the virus won’t show up in a few days. Negative test results are not a sure way to keep coronavirus away from school.
The government is firmly convinced that they are not closing (or closing – ugh again!) The entire educational system because the problem focuses on certain hotspots. The main hotspot is near me. They also thought about the idea of only closing middle and high schools – because that has the least impact on the economy. Seriously, most parents will not send their children to local primary school if it is not safe for people over 12 to be in school. It’s just ridiculous.
I’m a little angry because the original plan was to remove the restrictions in phases with two weeks between each phase. The first phase was grades 1 to 3 in primary schools and 11th to 12th grades in high schools. I admit that I was glad that we were not included in this trial period. Then, after only half a week, they suddenly announced that all classes would go back to school the following Sunday – just a week after the start of the first phase.
There was talk of each class being taught for two days and having separate classes and strict separation, but they quickly decided that everyone could return. IKEA opened, the shops opened, you could go to the hairdresser. It was all very quick and not on schedule. A week after the opening of the shopping centers, the synagogues allowed up to 50 people, practically everything was over. Only that they forgot to inform the corona virus.
I really wanted DD to stay home for another week, but there was no way I could stop her from going to school. She is an only child and had not seen anyone in over two months! She was so excited to finally see her friends. Every instinct in me said this wasn’t a good idea, but I couldn’t fight the system and my 11-year-old daughter.
So DD went to school. On the first day, she said that no one was concerned with masks and the girls hugged each other. Then we had the hottest and longest heat wave in decades. 37-38C (approximately 100F) daily for five days. It was impossible to sit with the windows open and wear masks. We were officially told that the children did not have to wear masks during the heat wave at school. Try putting this cat back in your pocket a week later.
And here we are in quarantine for 10 days just two weeks after returning to school. We and more than 10,000 other Israeli citizens. We could all stand at our windows and shout: “I knew that would happen!” or “We told you!” It wouldn’t make a blind difference. The economy is stupid.
