Wood and rattan give the Glorietta restaurant in Sydney warmth Interior Design

The Australian studio Alexander & Co has furnished the formerly strict interior of this Italian restaurant in Sydney with wooden furniture and a rattan blanket in cages.

Glorietta is located in a single-story unit of a recently completed tower in North Sydney’s busy business district.

The restaurant with 220 seats was designed by Alexander & Co. to present a range of inviting materials – a complete contrast to its “cold and commercial” structural shell, which was dominated by glass surfaces.

“It was definitely a key challenge to create the idea of ​​history and legacy from a brand new thing,” said studio founder, Jeremy Bull, “trying to tell a story that has nothing old to work with , cost-conscious and space-sensitive way, and to create a new sense of location and not a commercial foyer. “

The studio started with the creation of convivial seating groups. In the middle of the double-height dining room there are a number of large communal tables – some of them made from wooden panels, others with cherry red worktops.

They sit directly under the “cloudscape” that the studio created over the ceiling and use rounded rattan cages that hide the existing metal cladding.

Each table is accompanied by a mixture of low-lying benches and bentwood chairs. There are also sofas with woven tubular backrests, which are covered with a mixture of mustard yellow, teal and baby pink pillows.

A comfortable green leather banquet runs along the edge of the restaurant. It is located directly in front of a spacious glass wall, the appearance of which is softened by pale, wafer-thin curtains.

Nearby is an olive tree and a few leafy plants in terracotta pots.

“We had a thousand reference pictures of regional Italy,” Bull told Dezeen.

“Our vision was to create a warm agricultural lineage and tone that evokes a deep love and appreciation for great food and wine and the joyful social interaction that goes with it.”

Guests can also sit at the more casual wooden high tables or the row of wicker chairs that have been set up in front of the open kitchen.

Some may take a look at how their orders are cooked in the pizza oven, which has been painted with abstract shapes.

Under one of the restaurant’s contemporary works of art is an additional dining area for intimate groups of three out of four guests, centered by a creamy stone table.

In the back of the room there is a wooden bar lined with wood, in which bottles of Italian spirits and spirits are openly displayed on a raised shelf.

The studio also used various floor coverings to loosely separate the areas of the restaurant.

Parts of the floor were covered with wooden boards, while others were inlaid with stone waste or smoothed with polished concrete.

Glorietta is the latest project from Alexander & Co that was founded in 2016.

Other recent works by the studio include the Burleigh Heads Pavilion, a restaurant in Brisbane with a sunny interior, and The Imperial, a restaurant in Sydney, which is said to commemorate the faded opulence of a forgotten palace.
