New to yoga? Get well prepared for your first class by reading this post about what to expect during your first yoga class.

Yoga is a great way to improve your physical and mental health by strengthening your body and centering your mind.

Don’t be intimidated by fancy terminology, all props and challenging poses. Yoga can suit everyone! And there is generally at least one yoga style that people enjoy.

Whether you are in the best shape of your life or just starting your fitness trip, yoga can work for you.

There are many free yoga options on YouTube. So, browse all options and choose something that appeals to you. Or attend a local yoga class near you.

How to choose your first yoga class

As a beginner, you want to make sure you choose the right class. Look for courses labeled “Introduction to Yoga” or “For Beginners”. These classes are going to be slow and explain the poses a little more precisely.

If you are more familiar with yoga, you can try other courses that sound interesting to you. If you’re struggling with back pain, I highly recommend low-impact classes that all have the same health benefits, but have less impact on your spine and joints.

What to wear

Yoga requires a lot of movement and stretching. So you want to feel good and be properly dressed so that you can enjoy the lessons to the fullest. You should avoid loose-fitting clothes that are in the way or that can be uncomfortable in certain poses.

I recommend wearing yoga pants or leggings and a tight-fitting shirt that won’t slide up easily when you move into different yoga poses.

As for shoes, you are barefoot during class. So carry everything you have most conveniently for traveling to and from class.

What to bring

I recommend bringing a bottle of water to class so you can stay well hydrated.

Otherwise, the yoga studio should have other equipment or “props” that you need for class there so you don’t have to worry about buying it. If you have your own yoga mat, feel free to bring it with you, but if not, don’t worry!

In the yoga studios, there are usually cubes in the classroom so you can keep your wallet and keys nearby. Remember to mute your phone so it doesn’t go out during class.

What are yoga props?

You will always want a yoga mat during class, but there are other devices called yoga props that teachers sometimes use during class. This includes a so-called block, which is essentially a block of hard foam or cork that you can use in multiple poses.

Another common yoga prop is a harness, which is a fabric harness that can make certain stretches easier.

You can also use a so-called cushion that looks like a pillow and is often used to provide support in restful poses.

After all, another common yoga prop is a blanket, and that’s exactly what it sounds like. You can use a blanket under your knees in certain poses. I therefore strongly recommend using one if you have knee problems.

Participate in your first yoga class

Now you can take your first yoga class!

I recommend that you come to class at least 10-15 minutes before the class starts so that you have enough time to settle in and prepare for the class. There is nothing worse than signing up for a yoga class to relax, and then relieve stress at the last minute and rush to class.

It can be a good idea to introduce yourself to the instructor and let them know that you are new.

Ask them what kind of props they recommend in class. They usually keep all the props in the back of the studio so you can get what you need and choose a place to set it up.

For your first class, you may want to choose something that is in the middle or back so that you can join in as other people move through the poses but go where you feel most comfortable.

Now breathe and relax! Try your best to be present during class and really enjoy it. Sometimes I find that my thoughts easily go to my to-do list, what I will eat later for dinner, etc. But I always try to bring my thoughts back to the present moment and focus on the class.

During the lesson, the teacher will guide you through various yoga poses and sequences. Follow the best you can, but don’t worry if you don’t do things right. Sometimes it takes a little practice!

At the end of the lesson there are a few minutes for shavasana or corpse keeping. This final pose is an opportunity for you to focus only on your breath and find your inner peace. This pose is frankly one of the best parts of yoga because after all the hard work you can just lie down and relax during class. It’s like your little reward!

The instructor uses a bell or sound to indicate when this time has expired. At this point they will end the class.

Once class is over, you will want to bring all of your yoga props back to the back of the room where you received them and wipe your yoga mat.

Benefits of yoga

Why should you try yoga? Yoga has many health benefits that make it a rewarding activity.

Physically, yoga can help you strengthen your bones, Reduce back pain and improve your balance. It can also help you improve flexibility and stretch your muscles.

Mentally, yoga also has numerous advantages. It has a great focus on the breath, inner peace and the development of a calm mind. Yoga can help you reduce stress, depression and anxiety, especially if you also practice yoga meditation techniques.

In addition to the many research studies that show how yoga can benefit your life, I can personally say that yoga has improved my life in several ways. I attended my first yoga class about eight years ago and never looked back.

I have had back pain all my life and yoga has been so important to my recovery and pain management process. I also found that yoga is a great way to stretch muscles that tend to become tense due to my back pain, such as B. my hamstrings.

Yoga has also had a major impact on my mental health. I’ve found that yoga helps reduce stress – and I feel the effects almost immediately.

I look forward to my yoga classes every week and find every experience so comforting. It is an hour when I am completely disconnected from the phone and can only concentrate on myself. I leave the yoga studio relaxed and feel ready to do the rest of my day or week.

How to Find a Yoga Class

You can find yoga classes in different ways. If you are already a member of a gym, check to see if there are yoga classes.

If not, google “yoga classes near me” and read the reviews for the various studios that appear in the search results.

If you are not yet sure whether you want to get involved in the investment, you can try some free yoga classes online first. Although I find the atmosphere of a yoga studio more relaxed, online videos are a great way to get started and practice from home.
