It can be scary when someone you love is sick. And it can be excruciating when they are diagnosed with a mental illness. When mental illnesses occur, they are different for everyone! And it can affect the family in other ways. Most importantly, it can be very difficult to tell the right person to someone who is going through this mental state. You may want to help them, but you may feel helpless.
You may know how to take good care of them if they have severe flu or cold, but you may not have enough experience in how to speak or deal with a mentally ill person. Like all other health problems, a person with a mental illness needs adequate support and love. And at worst, sometimes you can’t identify the symptoms or the person may not accept that they have a mental illness to see a doctor. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to help them. Here’s how to help someone who doesn’t want help:
Why people don’t want help
You can initially refuse to see a doctor. You shouldn’t force them to do anything they’re not prepared for. They need to understand their situation and the reason why they are not looking for support. Questions and advice like “Why aren’t you looking for help?” or “only you can help yourself, so you should see a doctor.” should be avoided. This can put them further into their resistance shell.
So you have to try to figure out what your problem might be. The best way to do this is to carefully consider their concerns and concerns. You can use other active listening methods to better understand them. If you are actively listening, it is best to stay away from question statements, as questions, especially “why?” Or “why did you do that?” Questions feel like accusations against others. With careful wording of the words, you can ask them when, how or what happened.
Once you get the idea of why they refuse to seek help, you may be able to convince them to consult a doctor, or even help them break their sheath. Here are some common reasons why someone may initially refuse to seek help:
- Low self-confidence: People don’t believe in themselves or their ability to make changes in their lives. When some others try to tell them what to do or what not to do, they acknowledge their mistakes.
- Stigma: Seeking help can worsen the situation due to the stigma associated with mental illness. Being prejudiced against people with mental illnesses sees them as less capable or makes others blame them, which increases their sense of failure. As a result, many people refuse to help because they do not want to recognize mental illness.
- Hopeless: Hopeless is one of the main factors. Most people with mental illness may have tried to seek help at some point in their life or condition. And unfortunately, many people have had bad experiences and no support during these times and they have come to the conclusion that no person or anything can make a difference in their lives. For certain mental illnesses such as depression and stress, hopelessness is the main reason. If you think that nothing could make a difference in your life, why should you make an effort at all? - Offended by pity: Some people may feel that asking for help is compassionate. And they don’t want to be treated like a child.
- Fear of rejection and discrimination: Many people with mental health problems fear that someone who knows about their problems will be ignored or avoided due to the stigma associated with the disease.
- Anxiety or other emotions are unbearable: People with mental health problems already have intense feelings of anxiety and depression that overwhelm them. They tend to avoid or ignore these emotions to deal with the disease.
How to be there for someone who is not yet ready to seek help
- Active listening: Instead of telling them what to do or not to do, listen to what they say. The best way here is to reflect on your emotions. It can be difficult to see a therapist and tell a stranger how you feel. On the other hand, actively listening helps a person explore their options and concerns. They are most likely to open when you use active listening skills. However, if you tell them what they should do, or if you ask “why” questions, they are more likely to close.
- Try not to use words that mean “should” or “should”: The words “should” and “must” imply requirements. It tells the person that they are wrong or that their decisions were wrong and they should have done so instead or not know how to solve problems themselves.
- Treat them as adults: Children or adults need to develop a sense of self-efficacy – the belief that they can make a difference in their lives. The only way to do this is to respect and motivate them, how they feel, and think about their ability to make individual decisions. - Process vs. Result: Most of the time, people want to find the right answer when helping others, but they tend to forget that the process that leads to the result is the essential part here. It takes time to break the envelope of the person building around you, and you should have enough patience and support to help them on this journey.
- Examine the code dependency: Even if you want to help someone so much, you may have to accidentally create obstacles. If the person is too dependent on themselves, they will likely avoid the consultation by concluding that they can rely on you and you will take good care of them.
- Use the CBT methods yourself: The methods used in cognitive behavioral therapy help solve mental health problems such as stress, depression, anxiety, etc. When you use these methods yourself, you get a general idea of how they feel or go through this situation, and this helps you communicate with them on a more personal level.
When things are really serious
In most cases, it’s probably a good idea to give your loved ones some care and time to get around. This gives them enough time to think about their situation and ultimately helps them to overcome their illness.
