I spend a lot of time covering up my gray roots every year. I always joke that I have no idea what my real hair color is because nobody has seen it in years!
When I was young, it was the beautiful rose gold color that Ieuan has now, but I actually think my real color is now dark brown, almost black with the strange gray.
Some time ago I had the opportunity to try it Instant Root Concealer Spray from L’Oreal Paris Magic Retouch and I chose the brown shade for testing. If I had to choose again, I would choose a color that matches my hair dye rather than my natural hair color for a better match.
The product is supplied in a small spray can, which promises sufficient content for up to 30 applications. The product should also last until you wash it out.
The size of the box makes it ideal to slip into your make-up bag or handbag.
I got the husband to apply the spray for me in my middle parting (key word “keep still”), and it took two good sprays of the spray to cover the roots.
The grays are much less visible even with just these few sprays.
As I mentioned before, the only problem I have is that I chose the shade to match my roots, but this doesn’t match my dyed hair. I would have been better off choosing the dark blonde shade and trying.
If the dark blonde shade offers as good coverage as the brown one I’ve tested, I could extend the time between salon color appointments by a few weeks.
My usual salon offers a root repair service where your roots can be literally stained along your mid-vertex and you can choose to either pay for a wash and blow dry or go home and wash it yourself.
The fee for this is between £ 10 and £ 15 (washing and blow-drying is extra, of course), but you need to find the time to get to the salon. Not so easy with the children in tow – and impossible, now thanks to COVID-19 we are still in lockdown!
Of course, this hides all roots and shades of gray, but apart from the cost Not everyone likes going to the hairdresser, right?
The Magic Retouch Instant Root Concealer Spray, on the other hand, costs £ 5.99 for 75 ml in boots or at Amazon and is available in 5 colors – light blonde, dark blonde, brown, dark brown and black. You can also buy a 150 ml bottle – the XL version for around £ 9.30.
And as you can see, it does a fairly respectable job with, if not full, gray / root coverage, almost completely.
If you want to find out your salon color and possibly Save yourself some money I think this particular root concealer product is worth trying. Even if you don’t get the right shade the first time, buying a second can of Magic Retouch means that you probably don’t know what your hair salon would ask for.
Still, I would still rate L’Oreal Paris Magic Retouch Instant Root Concealer Spray as an emergency product if you want to look groomed and just don’t have the time or money to go to the salon.
I would certainly classify Lockdown as an emergency scenario when it comes to hiding that gray hair!
