On May 8, it was announced that applicants whose work permits had been successfully processed under the IEC Visa program before Canada was forced to close its borders can now travel to the country for their summer jobs, internships, and fixed-term contracts. When you arrive at customs in Canada, you will need a copy of your current job offer and an introductory letter for the port of entry. Be prepared to put yourself in isolation for a period of two weeks after your arrival.
The IEC Visa program enables youth ages 18 to 35 to apply for work in Canada through one of three programs
- Working Holiday Visa – An open work permit is issued to young travelers who want to see the country while making money to support their travels by working on farms, summer camps, resorts, etc.
- Young Professionals – An employer-specific work permit is issued to young university graduates who want to gain experience in professional roles. Depending on the job offer, visas are issued for a period of up to 24 months
- International Co-op (internship) – an employer-specific work permit for people enrolled in college who have a job offer to gain work experience as part of their academic curriculum.
While the IRCC is not currently processing IEC requests, they continue to accept them. Many provinces in Canada have already started to loosen the restrictions as companies start to recover and start planning for the winter season. If companies that had to be closed during the closure are reopened, the IRCC processes applications to provide them with the workers they need. Have you started planning your winter work experience in Canada?
