I should fix my shades of gray the week after the lock started. So I had to try this whole hair color at home very early during the quarantine. I will not lie. I was petrified. I saw the same colorist Kim Vofor over ten years. And I never dyed my hair myself. Learn how to cover your grays at home.
When I’m overdue for hair appointments a couple of weeks, I usually use a temporary spray to cover shades of gray. My darling is Oribe Airbrush Root touch-up spray (I use dark brown). It smells delicious and is easy to spray on shades of gray. If I only have a few shades of gray, I use mine TouchBack Gray Root Touch Up Marker (also in dark brown). It basically works like a magic marker and lets you paint gray hair sporadically. The only problem with both of them is that they wash out the moment you shower.
Temporary gray hair solutions are fine if you know you will see a hair dye soon. But with no date when the California salons reopened, I knew I had to take the risk and color my roots myself. I decided to go with L’Oreal Magic Root Rescue. Before applying, I asked my #ssInstaFam for tips on hair color at home. And they mostly got through! If you plan to cover your roots during quarantine, I’ve learned everything here, both from your tips and from my own experience:
Tips for coloring your hair at home
Protect your face
The instructions in my home hair color kit were extensive and thorough. The only thing i miss? A foreword to protect your face. Do you know when you are in the salon and your colorist is applying a protective cream around your hairline? Well, the kit doesn’t include any. So just make up for everything you have at home: Vaseline works well when you have it. I didn’t do it, so I used aquaphor, which did the trick. Simply apply it directly around your hairline on your skin, including your ears.
Wear dark clothes and dark towels
When applying the paint, be sure to wear a dark top if the dye gets on your clothes. Also use a dark towel when you come out of the shower. I didn’t have one, so I just used a dog towel that I don’t care about.
Manage your expectations
While the packaging indicated that it was a permanent color, after a few weeks I noticed that my color was gradually fading. That never happened when I saw Kim! But I remembered that that’s why he is a well-known colorist. I’m using a box dye that’s under $ 10. Still, it definitely does the trick for now. I just ordered a new box and will make another round of paint for the home next week. Hopefully the salons will open again when it starts to fade again.
