The answer to the point: a hurricane and a typhoon are essentially the same thing – both tropical cyclones with the same characteristics. The only real difference between a typhoon and a hurricane (and a tropical cyclone) is its location.
In general, a tropical cyclone is referred to as a in much of the western hemisphere, the North Atlantic, and the northeastern Pacific hurricane. In the northwest Pacific basin, a tropical cyclone is called a typhoon. In the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, it is simply referred to as a cyclone (or tropical cyclone).

Recipe for a hurricane or typhoon
To create a hurricane, typhoon, or a real tropical cyclone, the following factors usually have to be present:
