Solo travel destination – Beyond Prague – Karlovy Vary – During the holidays I go to the Czech Republic and to the legendary Spa Karlovy Vary. It is located in the north of the Bohemian region on the German border and is known in German as Karlsbad / Karlsbad. It has been a top vacation spot for over 100 years. While the hot springs are the main reason for its fame as a wellness vacation destination, it’s also a popular ski area.
Solo travel destination – Beyond Prague – Karlovy Vary Vary: Overview:
Karlovy Vary was named after the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV after the 14th century, who is said to have “discovered” it. In the 15th century, the legendary 1401, King Wenceslaus IV granted the city of Karlovy Vary special privileges. There were many famous visitors from Peter the Great from Russia to the German poet Johann Goethe who was visited 13 times!
In the 21st century, it is still one of the most sought after spas in the Czech Republic (and Europe ??). Known for its elegance and great architecture, it is a great place for a solo travel destination.

Solo travel destination beyond Prague-Karlovy Vary Vary: Arrival:
By car, bus and train
For my trip I not only bought mainly online, but also the paperback “Prague & the Czech Republic” from Lonely Planet. It’s a great way to do a self-guided tour and get lots of practical advice.
Where to sleep:
I couldn’t resist real luxury: I booked a week at the Grandhotel Pupp, which was founded in 1701. (Yes, it says “poup”!) I first came across it when I saw “Last Holiday” with Queen Latifah. Her character is loosely based on an earlier British film (SPOILER ALERT!) And mistakenly believes that she will die in three weeks. She decided to blow up all her money in Karlovy Vary at this hotel in Old Europe and try extreme sports without losing anything. James Bond can also be seen relaxed in a Grandhotel Pupp Suite in the “Casino Royale”. (Film fans may also want to visit the world-famous Karlovy Vary International Film Festival at Hotel Thermal.) If you’re not a film fan, you’ll still find plenty of Old World charm here.
Grandhotel Pupp also offers some Sol0 rooms for less than $ 200 / night with spa access. You can find information on dates and prices or other accommodation options in our Booking.com search engine on our homepage. There you will find options from inexpensive spots to other 4 and 5 star offers. See also our Czech travel packages and our search engine, the Solo travel pricing tracker.
