9 tips to help you survive endometriosis travel Expat

I was very open to living with Endometriosis. Since my diagnosis, I have traveled the world and even checked off dreams like the Mount Everest Base Camp Trek, attended a friend’s wedding in India, traveled by train through Sri Lanka and much more. But with all of this, I try to make it transparent that I am traveling with endometriosis – a chronic, incurable condition that affects my daily life. And of course it affects how I travel.

Today I want to tell you a bit more about my endometriosis history and my top tips for managing travel with endometriosis. It’s all in the spirit of Month of awareness of endometriosiswho rolls around every March (although for us who have the disease – every month is a month that we work for).

My endometriosis story

I’ve struggled with my health for years, looking for an answer to my variety of symptoms – from digestion to fatigue to chronic pain and more. I’ve seen gastroenterologists, neurologists, and hematologists, but I never thought that the answer could be a condition that I only saw as “painful periods” and that I’ve known all my life as my mother (and probably grandma) would have. But at the end of my joke, after exhausting all other diagnostic procedures, my doctor opted for laparoscopic surgery. The result: Endometriosis.

What I’ve learned since then is that endometriosis is a complex, cross-system disease that doesn’t present itself as “just painful periods” Whole body disease that although it concerns 1 in 10 womenis dramatically under-researched. The medical community needs to step up, commit to non-judgmental, non-pharmaceutically funded research, and a shorter diagnosis period (this takes on average 7-10 years to get the diagnosis). We need less invasive diagnostic procedures, we need more excision insurance coverage (the gold standard of care), and we need one heal. We need awareness, and that’s what March is about.

How to travel with endometriosis

But it could all take years. In the meantime, what should we do who live with endometriosis? It’s not fair to put our lives on hold – although many, many Endo warriors do. I made the conscious decision to follow my passion for travel despite endometriosis. Here are the main tips I learned.

1. Use the spoon theory

For good reason, I put the spoon theory at the top of this list of tips for traveling with endometriosis. Learning spoon theory will change your mindset and affect every decision in your daily life. If used wisely, it can really change your quality of life.

The spoon theory is one way to design your mental and physical energy. The idea is that each person has a certain number of “spoons”, each of which represents the energy that is needed to carry out daily activities. For example, two spoons may be needed to shower. Five spoons may be required to get through airport security.

The spoon theory is useful for people with endometriosis because it is a chronic disease that causes fatigue. This is particularly relevant for travel. You have to ration your spoons all day long. For example, if you take a tour in the morning, you can choose an activity with a “lower spoon”, e.g. B. watch a movie or go to a café in the evening. Remember – it’s okay to rest!

2. Bring along non-toxic menstrual products

Endometriosis can be a whole body disease, but is best known for its menstrual symptoms and painful periods. Endometriosis is also associated with hormone imbalance and especially estrogen dominance. The endometriosis lesions actually produce their own estrogento create a vicious cycle and terrible symptoms. That is why it is really important for people with endometriosis to choose non-toxic menstrual products where possible so that we can reduce our hormone overload!

3. Practice slow travel

Slow travel goes hand in hand with the spoon theory. Traveling can be very stressful – between trains, planes, security, long hours on your feet, looking for your accommodation and much more. And I personally know Stress is mine greatest Triggers the endometriosis symptom.

Over the years I have learned how beneficial it is to practice slow travel. I tend to spend longer in places that other people rush through. For example, I spent a week in Marrakech, which most people consider a “stopover city”. However, there are two advantages. Slow travel not only protects your body, you can also connect to places on a deeper level!

4. Pack a heating pad

I know I’m not alone with that My heating pad is a lifeline during this time of the monthor literally any endo torch. A heating pad is actually a thermal modality for pain relief that can penetrate a few centimeters deep. It increases tissue mobility and blood flow to the area, which can help with inflammation. (Remember that if you have recently had surgery such as diagnostic laparoscopy, you should opt for a cold / cryotherapy instead.)

I know that a heating pad takes up space in your suitcase, but it’s a worthy addition to travel with endometriosis. Try a reheatable heating pador a Infrared heating pad that uses body heat to warm up. ON Tens unit is another portable modality that can lower pain levels.

5. Bring loose, flowing clothing

If you suffer from endometriosis, you probably know “Endo belly. Endo-belly occurs during an endometriosis torch and it looks a lot like bloating as our belly expands. However, this is so much more than just bloating. For me, an endo stomach is painful, feels heavy and can appear after everything, from eating dairy products to simply drinking water or breathing! Endo-belly is not just a reaction to food, it actually occurs when our endometriosis lesions become inflamed or bleed.

Therefore, loose, flowing clothing is definitely the answer when it comes to traveling with endometriosis. Say goodbye to tight waist bands, high-waisted jeans or bandage dresses (at least when you’re in one swoop!). I feel so much better knowing that I have some “endofriendly” outfits in my hand luggage.

6. Bring pain medication

This is a no-brainer for those of us with endometriosis that cause chronic and often excruciating pain. For me, pain levels are the main reason that endometriosis has affected my work, my travel, and my daily life. So it’s really important that you take your pain reliever with you on the street. For many of us, the recipe means or OTC pain reliever or muscle relaxants.

Make sure your recipes are filled out before you travel. Depending on your insurance plan, you can often receive medication for 90 days. In my experience, it’s always better to plan ahead when it comes to travel!

7. Reduce caffeine intake

Speaking of pain, I have something to tell you that could hurt. If you’re traveling with endometriosis, it may be a good time to say goodbye to coffee (for now). Is caffeine shown to increase pain levels and make other symptoms associated with endometriosis worse. Your body is already on high alert during the trip. So it’s best to take a break when it comes to the caffeine trigger.

When I say that, I have to be completely honest. I definitely still drink coffee when I travel – I love coffee and it’s a cultural experience to try local coffee in the different regions I travel to. However, I definitely reduce my intake and try to limit my coffee to special occasions. And when I notice that my pain is increasing, coffee is the first thing I have to do.

8. Stick to your training routine

It’s easy to let go of your workout routine while traveling. Trust me, I know. However, I have found exercise one significant positive effect on my symptoms and pain.

Personally, a low impact exercise helps me the most. Think walking, stretching, and yoga. I used to run half marathons and did HIIT training. Although I still love it occasionally, I have unfortunately found that this worsens my endometriosis symptoms. There are a few Low level research This shows that all exercises, regardless of intensity, can alleviate your endometriosis symptoms by reducing inflammation and estrogen, and producing endorphins. Anecdotes from pelvic physiotherapists, however, recommend starting with low-impact exercises that don’t stimulate your sympathetic nervous system, which can be a symptomatic culprit for many of us with endometriosis.

In any case, it is important that you keep your exercise routine on the road if you feel like it! I try to walk a lot through cities, hike in the country and even visit some local yoga studios. packaging Resistance bands is another great and portable way to stay active on the go.

9. Communicate your needs

Finally, one of the most important tips I can give regarding endometriosis travel is to inform your travel partner of your needs. If you’re traveling alone, you may need to share them with new friends you meet on the go.

You can easily avoid many confrontations, misunderstandings and conflicting expectations Express your needs. Inform your travel partner about endometriosis and what this means for you, e.g. B. where and what to eat, how long you can stay outside, what to do during a pain torch, when to take a break, etc. chances are they will help and support you, and the experience will do much better!

I went on a trip with one of my best friends in January, the Likewise has endometriosis. It was wild how much we were on the same wavelength when it came to resting or saving our energy. If you have a friend with endometriosis, why not plan a trip together ?!

I do not think endometriosis is something that needs to be overcome as it is an incurable chronic disease. I can’t really control it. But what I do can Control is my reaction to endometriosis.
