Virtual teams are the new norm and it is important that you get creative when engaging teams that work remotely.

Work from home has increased dramatically and has continued to increase in recent years.

This new way of providing work forces companies to become creative in the engagement of employees and in the team.

Here are some statistics about working from home.

The number of employers offering an option to work from home has increased by 40% in the last 5 years

The number of regular teleworkers (without the self-employed) has increased by 115% since 2005.

Employers who offer at least part-time telework flexibility save a total of $ 44 billion a year.

As an employee from home for the past 2 years, I can say that engagement is an opportunity. There is the same responsibility between the remote employee and the manager of the remote employee for their own commitment.

Here are career tips to keep you committed to working from home:

1. Communicate frequently

The more you communicate, the more your “presence” becomes noticeable. Do your best to respond immediately to emails and calls.

Although you can’t manage your email address and phone 24 hours a day, make sure you’re sending the right expectations about your calendar that you’re unavailable.

Block focus time so you can get your work done and be productive.

This is important to maintain engagement so that you not only feel connected to the action, but also do not feel isolated because you are not in the office.

2. Use your laptop camera frequently

Join video calls instead of just dialing in. In this way you feel connected to your colleagues and superiors.

It’s also great to see them on video and get a feel for your home office. My employees and I use this as often as possible. This has helped us continue to get involved and we look forward to our next personal meetings

As I mentioned in this post, managers of homeworkers also share responsibility for the team’s engagement. It is therefore important that managers also make efforts to keep the team busy.

Here are some tips for the work of home managers or superiors.

1. Conduct team engagement activities on a regular basis

Take the time to plan team engagement activities for your team, not only for the teams on site, but also for the teams that work remotely.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Plan a theme day where all teams can dress up and be silly for the meeting.
  • Themed day ideas
  • Silly hat day
  • 80s headband
  • Hoodie Day
  • Margarita Day – best on Fridays
  • Color days – Follow the rainbow colors and assign one day of the week per color
  • Encourage everyone to put coffee in their favorite cups
  • Prepare bingo cards for everyone. Take a photo of bingo cards and send a unique bingo card per team member
  • Send the bingo numbers via email.
  • Keep the master file with the bingo numbers and send them at noon so that the team can catch up.
  • The first person to send the card by email in the pattern wins
  • Alternative approach

  • Go to video conference
  • Let all of your cameras turn on
  • Let them print the bingo card
  • Share the masterfile on your screen and the pattern for the bingo round
  • Check the numbers LIVE as you select the number
  • The first person to complete the pattern and show the bingo card wins
  • This is an opportunity for your team to catch up at the end of the week. You can make it a theme day so the team can look forward to it and dress up silly.
  • Choose one of your Friday rounds so the team can share their favorite dessert.
  • Group the team in 2 and play charades. Give the team 5 minutes to prepare themselves and return to the video conference.
  • Complete a list of questions for a quiz party
  • Let the team answer the questions and make it a competition between the teams to make it more fun
  • Group the team in 2 and play Pictionary. Use the Webex or GTM pen feature so everyone can see the drawing.
  • Show each other’s doggy to the team. This is a guaranteed selection for me
  • Choose songs from the 80s, 90s or early 2000s.
  • Let the team name the song while the team members sing it.
  • 2. Catch up with your Work From Home team members

    It’s so easy to deal with different things in the office and deliver left and right. However, make sure you prioritize your work from the home team.

    One-on-one discussions are so rigid and formal that it is a habit to have a touch basis once a week.

    Don’t just talk about the status of actions and upcoming priorities, but also ask how they feel. Ask if they feel supported and if there is anything you can do for them.

    As a manager, you are responsible for the entire commitment of your team. This includes their productivity and well-being.

    Remote employees feel left out in the office and excluded from everyday life. Do your best to make them feel welcome and still be part of the team, even when they’re not physically in the office.

    3. Identify top performers

    Achievers should be recognized regardless of where the work was delivered (remotely or on-site), but it’s still a great initiative to engage dedicated remote team members.

    Create a weekly email with the best performers that includes the image and statistics of the person you recognized.

    I suggest that you do not distinguish between remote / onsite in these emails so that the team does not compare home work with on-site performance.

    It is about recognizing top performers and promoting healthy competition within the team.

    These are simple tips that you can use to start being a dedicated employee or to keep your team busy when you start managing employees who work from home.

    It takes a little creativity, discipline, and effort, but it is possible to maintain the team’s commitment to the team. Your leadership strategy can be different and requires that you try a different approach when you’re leading a mixed team.
