We have been consulting with coaches, athletes and teams for over three decades. The following ten traits are some of the things that people with great sports programs have in common. It is no accident. Excellence is never a coincidence. Be deliberate when it comes to your team culture.
- Consistent and clear standards and values: Preset team values are the foundation or cornerstone for every successful team. What is your team’s identity? Great teams establish their own culture.
- The team members feel obliged together to learn and follow the team values: People are committed to team values and live them in their actions. “That’s how we do it hereIs something the team members are proud of. The feeling is that “We don’t want to do anything that will let the coaches, the team and everyone else downr ”. Everyone is responsible.
- Master teacher – main motivators: The first-way coach gains credibility, respect and trust, how much he knows and how well he can teach it. Successful coaches understand the game and its players and how to teach both.
- Positive role models: Trainers must consistently live the team values in their actions. The seniors are the best examples of team values. In these programs, newcomers or second year students can say: “iIf you are not sure how hard you work or how you should act in a situation, just watch our seniors and follow their example. “ Your older players and most talented players must be your best workers.
- All roles are rated: When there is relationship-based leadership, everyone who contributes to the team is shown value. Credit is shared. When all roles are rated, players are more willing to take roles and teams are more successful.
- Positive rites of passage: Deliberately created positive traditions offer athletes the opportunity to be welcomed and develop into leaders. Nothing that can be seen as cloudiness is omnipresent.
- Consistent performance feedback: Trainers know how to reconcile praise and correction. Athletes take corrections as a compliment – they can be trained.
- Trust – The players trust each other and their coaches. They trust their education. Mutual trust enables direct, open, honest communication and fearless play.
- Sense of urgency: There is a high level of energy. Individual and team discipline can be seen in the targeted attention and dedication of everyone. Details are important. Only disciplined teams have the chance to win championships.
- Effects on the player’s life: The players in these programs value the experience so much that they carry the lessons and values into their lives beyond the season. They form successful teams themselves.
