For the first few days, working from home can feel like a dream. You can wear whatever you want, eat when you want, and more! But let’s face it: if you work with very little social interaction, you can go crazy. If you don’t have a plan, it won’t take long for your focus and concentration to wane. It is from personal experience way too easy let yourself be distracted at work from home. Housework, watching TV and even pets can lead to poor concentration. Fortunately, you can avoid this by using these simple tips to stay focused while working from home!
Simple tips to limit distraction and stay focused while working from home
These methods of limiting distractions are far from complicated and can save you a lot of stress. Not to mention that staying productive keeps your mental and emotional health at bay. By putting each of these tips into practice every day, you can prepare for a productive and (perhaps more importantly) happy working day!
1. Set a schedule
This is the number one most important rule when working from home. It’s incredibly easy to relax if you don’t set a schedule. If you work from home, you may get a little more flexibility in working hours. However, it is important to know that you still have a job to do. You don’t want to sit in front of the TV with your morning coffee and suddenly realize that you were there for three hours. Believe me: It happens.
This doesn’t just mean setting a schedule for work. You can also schedule working hours, workouts and breaks. If the writing down helps you stick to the plan, definitely do it! Just have a plan and follow through.
2. Pajamas are for sleeping
Working in your PJs is fine if you work a little more on weekends. However, you should really get up and get dressed during the week. I’m not saying you need to get everything in order, but washing your face, brushing your hair, and putting on daywear (yoga pants allowed) will increase your inspiration and focus.
3. Create a dedicated one Workspace
You will find that choosing a workspace helps you feel more focused. If you have a real office, great! If you don’t, that’s fine too. Place a work area at the kitchen table or counter (preferably facing away from the television). Keep it clean and organized so that only the bare essentials are within reach.
4. Make a checklist of daily projects and weekly goals
You have your schedule, you are ready and dressed and you have set up your work area. Now is the time to write down your daily projects and set your weekly goals. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to remove tasks from your list. If you have them written down, you can better manage your time.
5. No electronics allowed
Leave the TV switched off, especially if your work area is aligned with it. Turning it on just distracts you and keeps you from reaching your daily goals. Also place your phone in a place where you need to get up to get it. If it’s right next to you, you might be tempted to access social media or text and call your best friend. Save these things for a scheduled break or after your workday ends!
6. Know when to pack it for the day
It is easy to lose track of the time when you work from home, especially when you are deep in a project. When we told you to set a schedule, we meant it. This includes planning a shutdown time to avoid burnout. The work will be there tomorrow. Treat yourself to some time to relax and refresh after a hard day’s work. You deserve it!
