6 ways to help children deal with uncertain times HomeSchool

Are you scared? If you have a child who is having problems right now, there are a few things you can do. Here are some ways we can help children deal with uncertain times.

We are currently living in historically important times. In years, people will look back on 2020 and talk about how we have dealt with everything that lies ahead and measure ourselves against how we react. Life is dramatically different at the moment, and adults and children are more afraid when we approach the unknown.

Our children expect us to react to everything that is going on around them. Our higher stress causes them to feel anxious too. And many of us have to seek protection, which can increase everyone’s tension.

So what should we do? How can we help our children face these uncertain times with more peace and less fear?

Here are 6 ways kids can handle uncertain times:

1 – Talk about what happens

One of the most important things we should do is talk to our children about what is happening. The amount of information we share with them depends on the age of our children. However, if your children have access to news or the internet, I can guarantee that they will hear everything about what is going on around us. Encourage them to ask questions. Share your own concerns with them.

Remember that we are not alone in this and that our hope comes from our knowledge that God has this under control and that nothing will happen without His permission. This does not mean that we will not experience tragedies in our lives. But if we are allowed to go through something difficult, we know that we will not go through it alone.

2 – Give them opportunities to process their feelings

We are all experiencing a wide range of emotions, from fear to uncertainty to anger. And children and animals alike can feel when we are more busy than usual. So much is currently unknown that it is sometimes difficult to remain optimistic. As parents, it is sometimes difficult for us to know how we can help our children express their concerns and process them therapeutically.

Deep breathing is a technique that we can teach our children. I made a video some time ago about how to do this deep breathing.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation is another way to help children relieve tension. Let your child lie on the floor and start with the head, try to squeeze the muscles as tight as possible, then release them. Then go to the next part of your body and do the same. Do this until you have gone through all the muscle groups in your body.

Refreshing thoughts is another technique to overcome anxiety. Let your child verbalize something that they are concerned about, and then help them express that thought more realistically. For example, if your child is concerned about our current health concerns and the thought is, “If I get this virus, I’ll die,” you can help them realize that the chances of it are almost nonexistent. Help them realize that a much more realistic thought is, “If I get this virus, I may get sick, but I should have a good rest.”

Another helpful exercise is to encourage our children to write their thoughts and feelings in a diary. There are many wonderful diaries that help our children lead through difficult situations so that they can come out on the other side in a much healthier place. Here are some options you should consider.

Be brave (8+) – These activities and fun exercises will help you feel braver, understand your feelings, make decisions about how to react, talk to others about your concerns (if you want) and courage, Self-confidence and positivity to grow.

Do not worry (8 years and older) – The supportive activities in this book aim to combat children’s anxiety and stress, help the child find out how and why they are worried, and encourage them to share with others about their child Worry to speak (if you want). and feel calmer.

3 – Provide positive distractions

With so many scary things around us, it is important that we positively distract our children to distract them from all of these health problems. This is a great time to go hiking, play in the backyard, spend a movie night, play games, read books together, etc. We will all have memories of those days and weeks in which we spend more time together, so we make sure that as many of these memories as possible are positive.

4 – Work on our own mental health

It is easy to take care of our families in uncertain times, but we have to make sure that we also think about our own mental and emotional health. Self-care is important and usually the first thing we ignore when we need it most. If you think you don’t have time to recharge, try to wake up and have time alone before your kids get up, give your kids a quiet time in their rooms, or have your spouse watch the kids You can have some time alone.

5 – Go outside if at all possible

Heal fresh air and sunshine! If at all possible, try spending some time outside. Let your children run in a wide field, go for a walk in the forest, go for a walk on the beach … even if you just sit on a garden chair in the garden and watch your children play, this is relaxing. Even better, get some exercise and run around with your kids in the back yard.

If your children are old enough, try walking alone. Even if you run laps around your house. We live in the country, have a long driveway, so I like to go up and down while talking to God. It is an amazing way for me to keep my prayer time while training.

6 – Stay active

I have seen many MEMEs that care about how important it is for us to save lives by sitting on our sofas and watching TV. And we can certainly do that. But spending too much time in front of the TV is not good for our mind or body. The extra time at home is a great opportunity for us to tackle some of these projects at home that we don’t seem to have time for. And the whole family can get involved together.

Take advantage of some of the amazing free courses that are currently available. Get the kids to do chores. Teach them life skills such as cooking and cleaning. Try to keep it entertaining and do things together to make it more enjoyable for everyone. When you stay active, remove things from your list, exercise, learn new skills, etc., you’ll feel good as you accomplish more throughout the day.

We live in uncertain times and are constantly bombarded with information that can make our children feel anxious. However, if we take some of the above measures, we will teach our children valuable skills that they can take with them and use throughout their lives. Let us help our families feel less anxious and take advantage of the extra time that we have been given. With the right attitude, it can really be a gift.
