The day could start with a nervous giggle as introductions are made and learners share their pet anger. Mine is always: “People spitting on the sidewalk – ugh!” The agenda is checked and the group sits down on their chairs. In a few moments, however, they are transported to the world of dementia. Learn a new perspective as someone who experiences changes in language, vision and sensory motor skills. Each activity creates a new awareness of what it is like to interact with and His interacted both as a care partner and as someone who lives with dementia. The learners walk through the room with theirs binoculars The PAC team enhances the experience by becoming obstacles that must be avoided or quickly crossing paths with someone who may not see them until the last second. Brain slides provide an effective picture of changes that are not noticeable when looking at a person. The oohs are audible because the large, healthy, mushy brain is compared to the brain of the person with late-stage Alzheimer’s. Can two thirds of brain matter really deteriorate without the skull resizing? What if the skull has shrunk to fit the size of the brain? That would be a very clear visual indication that brain changes have occurred, but that’s not the case. So it’s up to us to be detectives with the big, healthy, mushy brain and figure out how to deal with this thing called dementia. To learn to react, do not react if things do not go as planned. Find ways to maximize remaining function and see the person as someone with the ability to feel joy, value, and purpose.
The day continues with learning approach, agendas, PPA ™, Hand-Under-Hand® and the importance of building relationships with those who are important to us. It is always interesting if some of the learners come from non-clinical areas, e.g. B. from the company’s office, the maintenance department or housekeeping. Sometimes their experiences are more profound because dementia care is not an issue in which they have ever been trained. One person working in the finance department said, “It makes so much sense now that Mary comes in every morning to ask for her bill and she doesn’t remember that we only discussed it the day before. The aim of the workshop on raising awareness of private skills is to convey a new understanding of what is different and what is still the same through dementia. It illuminates us with strategies that are useful in challenging situations.
