Can too much screen time change your brain? Health Education

Have you ever wondered if all the scrolling, snapping, and texting your smartphone affects your brain? Scientists are doing this and want to find out whether the “screen time” – the time spent viewing smartphones, computers, and television screens – changes time Develop brain.

Previous research has shown Differences in the brains of young adults who spend a lot of time playing video gamescompared to those who don’t. Scientists want to learn more about how screen time affects the younger brains of children and adolescents.

Brain scans from the ABCD study (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development) shown A difference in the brain of some 9 and 10 year olds who use smartphones, tablets and video games for more than 7 hours a day compared to those who used less screen time. The scans showed that the cortex, the outer layer of the brain The processing of information from the five senses was thinner in children who spent a lot of time on screens than in children who did not.

This Thinning of the cortex usually happens as children and adolescents get older and their brains mature. This indicates that there may be a connection between the screen time and brain Development. However, we cannot be sure when the screen will appear causes those differences.

Researchers will continue to perform brain scans on EU participants ABCD study to see how their brains change over time. Finally, the researchers hope to find out whether and how screen time is related to changes in the developing brain.

Screen time is just one of the things scientists are studying with it ABCD study. They compare the (initial) basic data with what they have learned from almost 12,000 young participants over the next 10 years. The results will tell a lot about how the brain develops, including biological and environmental factors that could affect it. For example:

  • How does team sport play relate to mental health?
  • Is there a connection between nutrition and brain development?
  • are Peer influences associated with risky behaviors?

Participants return to follow-up visits each year so that scientists can see how their brains change over time.
