An unsettling number of people are confused about what kind of loyalty they owe their employers. I regularly receive letters from people asking if it would be disloyal to them to look for a new job (as if their company was a romantic partner they would cheat) … from people who feel guilty about their job for to leave a better offer … and from people who would like to quit but feel obliged to stay because “we are just so busy” or “another key person on my team has recently left”.
It’s not that people shouldn’t have it any Loyalty to their employers. But people misunderstand balance in a way that disproportionately harms themselves and at the same time benefits their businesses.
