At the top of Lake Wakatipu you will find a truly exceptional retreat. The hotel is located in one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand, ecoscapes offers an environmentally friendly escape without compromising on luxury or comfort.
We stayed at EcoScapes during our road trip on the South Island – and we couldn’t have asked for a better stay.
Why should you choose EcoScapes?
The EcoScapes units are built with the environment in mind. Everything is world-conscious: from the contractors to the materials from which these beautiful units were built. The result? Passive, energy-saving rooms that have been designed and built with environmentally friendly building technology from the region.
No compromise on luxury
Enjoy the view from your queen-size bed or watch a movie on the huge projection screen. With the included iPad, you can control the temperature exactly as you see and hear it.
Treat yourself to a meal at the neighboring Kinloch Lodge, a remote wilderness outpost that has been offering accommodations since 1868. If you prefer, enjoy a gourmet breakfast in bed.
Lots of things to see and do
EcoScapes is out of the way – but that doesn’t mean you’ll get bored here! Because there are lots of exciting activities in the area … everything from kayaking on Lake Wakatipu to horseback riding along the Rees River.
And if you like hiking, you’re in luck, because the start of the Routeburn Track – one of New Zealand’s nine Great Walks – is 17 km from EcoScapes.
The guest units
EcoScapes offers two guest units next to the Kinloch Lodge.
The main feature of each unit is the large window, which offers an incomparable view of the mountains and the lake.
There were a few occasions when we caught ourselves looking out and quietly guessing the landscape in front of us for a few minutes.
The queen-size bed is right by the window, so you can go to sleep and wake up to the sight of the mountains.
The window seat with pillows and several books for coffee tables is a great place to relax. I sat there from time to time, leafing through the books and sipping my Chardonnay before occasionally raising my eyes to check the view … It was bliss.
There is a large corner couch and a living area next to the bed. However, we didn’t really use this area as we were either outside or in bed and enjoyed the view.
Each unit has a small veranda with a seating area. It’s a great place to have a drink while enjoying the scenery.
Kinloch Lodge restaurant
The restaurant is located right next to the EcoScapes units. It offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options with a choice of indoor or outdoor seating.
The food is prepared with regional, seasonal ingredients and the restaurant is aimed at vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free guests.
Visitors to the EcoScape can also use the spa pool near the accommodations. This pool is shared by both units and is therefore unfortunately not private.
Things to do
Lake Wakatipu is 80 km long, making it the longest lake in New Zealand. The lake is known for its incredible scenery and is a common setting for Hollywood films.
The Kinloch Lodge offers various activities on and around the lake. One of the main activities is KayakingThis is a great way to see the lake and the surrounding area.
The Routeburn Track is a breathtaking hike that starts in Mount Aspiring National Park and ends in Fiordland National Park. It takes you through some of New Zealand’s best landscapes.
The route takes two to four days. However, if you don’t have time, you don’t have to hike all the way. The first section to the Routeburn Flats is already breathtaking – as is the Routeburn Falls if you want to push a little further.
Kinloch Lodge provides transportation to and from the beginning of the route.
There are some companies that offer horse riding excursions in the area. We have booked one 2.5 h drive with highland horses,
Our trip took us into the Rees Valley and saw us navigating through forests and crossing rivers. I love riding and this turned out to be one of my favorite things to do on this trip.
The Dart River is a glacier-fed river that flows into Lake Wakatipu. The river offers a whole range of fun and exciting activitiesthat are not too far from EcoScapes.
From jet boat adventures to inflatable kayaking, you can easily fill your days with activities around the Dart River.
Things to know before you go
Take enough time to get to EcoScapes. The road from Queenstown to Kinloch is breathtaking, which means that you want to stop often on the way.
Visit EcoScapes before sunset as this is an excellent place to enjoy.
Unfortunately, sand flies are inevitable in this area. They provide insect repellent at the lodge, but if you want protection all day, bring your own.
Reserve dinner in the restaurant
Due to the remoteness of the location, Kinloch Lodge prefers guests to reserve dinner.
If there are no reservations in winter, they close at 6 p.m.
The last nine kilometers after Kinloch are on a gravel road. Depending on the weather and your willingness to drive on gravel roads, you may want to park your car in Glenorchy and take the boat to Kinloch. However, this must be agreed in advance with Kinloch Lodge.
We had an unforgettable stay at EcoScapes and would recommend this accommodation to anyone looking for accommodation near Glenorchy.
Although EcoScapes is remote, there is definitely no lack of activity in the region. If you love to relax after a day of activities and just enjoy the wonderful view, this is the place for you.
